Baldurs Gate 1 or 2, which is better?

Personally I liked BG1 more. If it had all the kits and classes and new character specific things in it, it would be even better.

I though BG1 was too long, too random, and too boring. It took forever just to clear out the Nashkel mines, the Firewind Bridge, etc. and that's not even going into the Cloakwood.
Too much Fed-Ex style quests really killed it for me so by the time the plot kicked in in Ch. 5 when you actually got to the city of Baldur's Gate, the fun was gone. IMHO.

You Kidding, right?! BG2 is better in every way. Why? The most obvious -the graphics, of course. But also the whole scenography is nicer, those chaotic architecture cities are marvelous. Compare that with BG1s scuare ones. The kits are a vast improvement, since they open opportunities for re-play with new pcs -and the class-stronghold thing is beautiful, it really makes the game more long lived. Another thing is the interaction between NPCs and PCs -the intrigues, the fights, the romances. I could go on forever so i think i'll stop now.

Sceneography? Nice word, will steal that and use it sometime.
Of course BG 2 looks better and has more features. It definitely gets my vote but it is still a development from BG1.
BG1 had its moments - the original. Much more modest beginnings too. Ever get pinned down by a horde of Kobold archers? Not likely to happen in BG2 is it? The characters are so powerful, if I have to get my brains sucked out or kill another pit fiend one more time...

I love the whole series, but BG2 is definitely my favorite. One of the primary reasons I like the series is the great character development, and BG2 is a definite expansion of that feature. I'm also a magic person, and the plethora of spells added is a great addition for me. No longer does my pc have to run and hide every time battle is joined.

Now enemies fear and cower at the awesome power of Abi-Dhalzim's Horrid Wilting!

The romance is also a great addition for social sods like me.

I'd have to say BGII. Dunno exactly why, it's just my honest opinion. In BGI the storyline went a bit slow, and then suddenly accelerated when in Baldur's Gate. In BGII, the storyline developes when you desire it to, which is way cooler. Also, the items in BGII are SO SWEET!
I replayed BGI recently, and I had to laugh when I started with the full 6 hit points! It went like: "Oh I'm hit! I need a potion! Damn, I'm hit again, gulp! Shit, that hurt, gimme a potion." and "Yes, I got 100 XP!!!" or "I can finally afford a plate mail!" Hilarious...

BGII is better in almost if not all aspects of the game but if I had to name a negative pointy of BGII I would say that their isn't enough things to do outside. You're in a dungeon most of the time...
I remember sending Khalid with bow to kill the preist of Cyric's (just outside Beregost) undead army and then going 6 on 1 shooting 2 magic missiles at a time and then colleccting 5000gp!!! and the Hammer of thunderbolt +2... ahh memories

BG2 for the higher levels. But I liked (damn what was the name of that tower...) Durlag's tower for the riddles and the four guardians etc in BG1. Never got to finish it because my main character kept dieing out on me when I got to some maze or something. #sigh#
The best part of BG2 is the part with the statues and the riddles and the items to put in boxes etc. I like genies too.
Summing this up. Yeah BG2 is better. Not only for graphics and kits and stuff, but for the storylines too.

Yeah, the graphics.
Don't forget that wonderful sceneography.

There is no way to compare those two. BG2, on my humble oppinion, is waaaaaaaaaay better than it's much favored (by me too) ancestor.
It has a fantastic plot , great interaction between the characters, it is rich, bringing a whole world to life - hey, man, i wouldn't change all those with nuttin.
As mentioned above, BG kinda ...bored you in the first chapters, before sending you right into the heat, when you finally got to the city of Baldur's Gate.
And to that, the randomness of many events and the chaotic way to move around in the early stages of the game - all those made the use of a walkthrough a must in certain occasions.
I vote for BG2!

Its like comparing Star Trek the next generation with the original star trek.
Of course it looks better and has a better plot, more character interaction. You can't really draw a fair comparison. BG2 wins hands down. But there'd be no BG2 without the success of BG1.
After all, the original Star Trek had Uhura, that freaky Amazon Planet and who could forget the loveable but fatherly-strict musing of Bones? Hmmm.
