Looting Dead Bodies

Hey gang,

Can anyone tell me why it is that I have to leave the map entirely in order to loot the dead after a battle? I have to return to Hommlett, rest, and return to the dungeon in order to see what was carried. I try clicking on bodies (which glow like the tutorial says they will), but nothing happens.

This is known bug due to either Microsoft Service Pack 2 or DirectX 9.0c.

The 3rd Official Patch addresses this issue. You'll find a link to it here.

Bear in mind, though, that the good fan patches, like the co8 patch and the moebius temple.dll are not coded to work with the official patch 3, but only 2. And since temple.dll also fixes the looting bug, they're not going to fix the compatibility problem any time soon. So, if you want to install temple.dll (which I highly recommend), you should ignore patch 3 and just put the .dll on top of 2.

Here's the link for temple.dll:
http://www.jadri.com/temple.zip

It's written by Moebius 2778 over at co8, and solves the looting problem for most people. It also changes some rules to better-conform to 3.5 (and in every case I think the original lack of conformity was not by choice, but by error, so this is a very designer-friendly mod). The only big difference is the inclusion of a level un-capper, allowing you to go up to level 20. You, however, don't need to take advantage of this, if you choose to play the way Troika wanted you to.

You must have applied the second official patch. If you have, you will have the proper temple.dll file in your ToEE directory. Replace that file with the one in the zip. Then put all the folders in the zip's "Data" folder into the "Data" folder in your ToEE directory (they will not replace anything there). Once you have done this, the game should run well, and the looting problem should be solved. It may mess up saved games you have, if you've used meta-magic feats, but this can be corrected, and you will likely not have to start over. Otherwise, everything should be fine. My own previously-saved games run just great.

Not to be stupid, but where do I get the 2nd patch, and do I need the first to do the second? o.O

You'll find a link to patch 2 within the link I provided ijn this very thread. It's in the starting post of that very thread.

Also, you don't need Patch 1 to install patch 2. Patch 2 covers the fixes of Patch 1 along with some new fixes of its own.

Found A Solution

Hi I just want to tell all of you that i found a solution for looting dead bodies. Apply patch #3 than download temple.dll (see Lord Platos's post) extract only temple.dll to game main folder. Download no-cd crack for version 3.0 (can be found on http://www.gamecopyworld.com) extract TOEE.exe into main folder of the game. Start the game and you should be able to loot dead bodies. It worked for me.If you can't find no-cd crack please e-mail me i'll send it to you.

P.S. I didn't finish the game so I'm not sure if everything works fine for the entire game.Sorry on my english.

Bye.

I would be very wary of installing the temple.dll from temple.zip without installing the rest. This is because much of what is in moebius' temple.dll references things in the data folder that he provides. If the game encounters circumstances where it needs info on, for instance, the modified version of magic missile, or to the rules for scorching ray or greater heroism, you may encounter problems if those rules are not there. Of course, if those things are already there, because you've previously installed temple.zip, then there won't be this problem, but then again applying temple.zip completely negates the need for patch 3, so one wonders why you would want to do so. I guess what I'm trying to say is patch two and temple.zip are enough, if you're not looking to change the game's content, but just make it run like it's supposed to.

Like i said i'm not sure if this type of solution is working all the way. Also i didn't try use advanced magic missle so i don't know if it's working fine. People can try and see if they have any problems.
Bye.

Another method to loot

I just picked up ToEE and forgot about this bug when I loaded the game. I still need to get the patch. I did discover by accident during a fight with bugbears that one of my characters COULD loot one of the dead bugbears (NOT the unconscious and dying ones however), but only IF you are still fighting some of the others. Once the fighting stopped, I couldn't loot the bodies anymore. Interestingly, when the fighting started up again with a couple of survivors hiding in a far room, I could loot once again.
So if you have a fight going well and have a free PC (I didn't try it with an NPC) you can use them to loot the dead while the others continue the fight. A mage or cleric that has exhausted any useful spells for the present fight would be a good choice.
Obviously this won't work for the last opponent killed or if you face a single opponent. The patch will be the best solution, but this is an option until you get it downloaded and installed.

You can also just press C to initiate combat and loot, even when there are no enemies around. Just put your guy near the corpse, press C, and click on the body.

This is annoying, however, to do all the time with every corpse, many of which are hard to center on in combat, for some reason. Also, doors are often affected in the same way looting is, and tehy are notoriously difficult to open in combat in places. In general C will get you through, but applying temple.zip fixes some other big problems anyway (including some fatal crash issues), so it really is the best thing to do, as Philos says.

PS: Hooray for activity on this board!!!!
