Mine would be the 'star' thingy. That kinda carried over from BG1, where it was one of the two formations that didn't screw up group movement. Characters didn't bump each other out of the way then (in me old days...), and the star gave 'em plenty space to maneuver in between each other.
I also like(d) the 'snake' thingy, especially for those nasty Kobold dungeons where characters would walk all over the dungeon if their way was blocked.
In BG2 I only use the star. What annoyed me about it is that the protagonist is now in the middle. Sucks when he's your best tank. I wish Bio had also included the old star with the protagonist at point.

snake is good for movement, wedge for fighting, and i use the star or circle for resting / shopping.
always cast prep spells in the star

I use the T formation. It works for me, 'cause I like to have 3 tanks and 3 mage/cleric/bowmen around. The tanks protect the weak, by providing a line.
However, this isn't great for ambushes or surrounded attacks. In this case, I use the 0 formation. Everyone back to back protecting one another is my idea of roleplaying. It seems more fun. Also, if my mage is being rushed, the tanks are close enough to go an defend them.

I always use the 2 staggered rows thing, since I only ever have 2 - 4 characters. It allows my main to be in front, and if stealthed, they stop before anyone is seen. The snake sucks because it makes the lead char stop what they're doing (ie cancels stealth, find traps etc) every time they move, otherwise I'd use it most of the time.
In the really tight areas I use the straight line so I can position them sensibly. On very rare occasions I use the horizontal straight line for a volley of missiles attack. Mostly I just swear at the totally moronic pathfinding, and how they haven't even *tried* to improve it - they just keep upping the nodes, which we all did in BG anyway
If the pathfinding wasn't so appalling I'd use a full party - haven't done that since the first time through BG.

I used to like the T-formation in BG1,coz there were lots of outdoor areas and I had a melee heavy party(3 fighters at least). But in BG2 I use the 2 staggered rows thing, just because my party is mostly spellcasters. Having Minsc in the frontline, I don't have much problem except Aerie trying to melee with her staff
. Oh, the star formation is good for a newly dualled mage as well.

I always use the standard six-on-a-dice formation, fighters up front and mages in the back.
