This may be a dumb question but does this high level thief ability allow characters to use the npc specific items?
thanks

You should, but sometimes you need special stats (similar or better than the NPC) to wear/use the specific equipment: i.e. for Valigar's armour you need a minimum wis., something similar with Keldorn plate etc.

What about very specific items? Specifically I am thinking of Xar's Moonblade from BGI- I remember the great graphic when he was walking around and I found the CLUA code, so a while ago I created it. Unfortunately, not only could I not equip it with my PC, it was then stuck in my inventory- I couldn't even select it. At the time I didn't have a rogue w/Use Any Item- does anyone know if it would make a difference?
FYI- I am play on a Mac. I don't think this will change anything, but you never know...

I was certain that the UAI, by definition, overrode any restrictions, skill, class, NPC, anything.
I remember running Jan around with Carsomyr (and I'm sure I'm not the first to try silly combo's like that!)

xar's moonblade is not flagged as droppable..you need to edit using near infinity...

Near Infinity
What is near infinity?
I don't know probably because I play on a Mac. Until recently there was no ToB, and there still isn't any Shadowkeeper, so I assume near infinity is an editor that is similar to Shadowkeeper. Thanks for your reply though. Why would the moonblade be undroppable in SoA but not in BG I?

Not if the restriction is regarding a minimum ability. In that case you need to have the right score to equip the item.

Aaah... so UAI only removes class and NPC restrictions, leaving attribute restrictions in place. I had never noticed that before, but I'm not very imaginative when it comes to equipping my char's...

Correct, stat limits still apply.
And Xan's moonblade you'll need to edit, probably... It's not 'supposed' to be found and used by the player.
