Yes, each great house has its own you can get by doing the quests for that particular house. Once you get to a certain level, you will be allowed to start your stronghold. you will have to get a building contract from the duke at Ebonhart. Then, you will have to pay money, 5,000 septims, I believe. Also, each house will require you to do a different deed for the completion of your stronghold.

Join a Great House and build a stronghold.

To join House Tevlanni, I went to Sadrith Mora. The Tevlanni Council House is behind the slave trader's, or to the right of the docks on the other side of the bay. Once you join either Tevlanni, Hlaalu or Redoran, do quests for them. I think it's around rank 4 that you can begin your stronghold. The woman to talk to about that would be in the Tevlanni Council House Hermitage, on the lowest level down the passages. Oh yeah, and the Duke is located in a stragecic place in Ebonheart, there is this big room with tables making a square shape around some plants. The Duke is up a round case of stairs (there are a lot of round cases of stairs in Ebonheart). The staircase that leads to the Duke has a woman in chiftin armor/helm/mask thingy standing at the bottom stair in the main room I described with the tables.

Hlalu (sp?) are a thieves house
Tevlanni are mages
and Redoran are fighters

correct?

If you're on the PC, there are mods that will actually adjust conditions of the final stronghold, usually adding something to the mix. This is especially true for the Telvanni one. At least one mod aids in getting quickly to and from the Hlaalu Stronghold. I've never joined the house, but I hear the stronghold for it is pretty hard to reach.

You are correct about the types of Houses. Just do a bunch of quests for a House and they will explain the whole stronghold thing.

Do you mean that the Hlaalu Stronghold is hard to reach? It is actually quite close to Balmora on the Odai Plateau, and is probably the most accessible of the three. Telvanni is way out in the middle of nowhere, but Redoran isn't too bad, somewhere between Maar Gan and Ald'ruhn I seem to recall.

It's Hlaalu. The mod is "House Hlaalu Stronghold Travel Agent," by Tommy Khajit (who does a lot of good stuff). Here's what his readme says, in part:

i really enjoy living in my house hlaalu stronghold. i didn't like the necessity to have to walk every time all the way to the civilized world. and i felt lonely now and again... therefore i invited ingrid, a pretty female nord, to enrich my life. ingrid is capable of teleporting me to merchant square in balmora, near the shops and the silt-strider, and to the ferry in hla-oad. find her waiting for you in rethan manor.

Hmm... sounds really cool actually! Though Almsivi Intervention works well too ;)

This is a cheat I guess, but I use the VTA mod by Emma. It lets you buy some very expensive rings from Rav'irr (sp?) in Balmora, and when you equip them a travel representative will appear and deliver you and any companions to all of the major locations in the game. (including all 3 strongholds)

Emma's also got that partly configured in her Laura Craft companion mod. After doing 2 or 3 quests for/with her, she gives you a ring that moves the pair of you (even if separated) to one of approximated 25 locations. I'm told that if you do a later quest she gives you a ring that lets you see a home where she can ring back as well, but I haven't gotten to that point.

I agree, it's kind of a cheat, and I only use it when trying to ring the both of us, anywhere. Otherwise, I take one of the more standard methods of traveling from city to city.

Get Telvanni, it's by far the best and there are quite a few mods for Tel Uvirith (the name of your stronghold), besides that travel mod for the Hlaalu one that Fable just posted Hlaalu has no mods, and it isn't that great either. Now, Redoran is fairly difficult to reach, but not that hard, it should only take you a minute or two. It is probably the worst of the strongholds, it ain't that pretty and doesn't have much NPCs and doesn't have that small village feel you get with Tel Uvirith. Now let's compare the two, Redoran is a small group of buildings that aren't that pretty and in the middle of blight storms, Tel Uvirith has a giant stronghold on a hill, with a bronze pathway with wierd looking green things on the side connecting it to the hill, it has small houses/giant nuts that gives it that feeling that it is more a settlement than a stronghold, plus it has Centaurian guards and the inside has many strange and mysterious things for you to explore. I know who I'm going with, Telvanni

I'd forgotten one more: Baratheon79's Rethan Expansion. Here are his notes on it:

The original Rethan Manor interior has been heavily modified, and now includes an enlarged dining area, as well as a library (not stocked this time), alchemy room (with ingredient jars), armory/display room, and a training room with functional practice dummies.

Additional buildings added include the West Tower (moved from previous versions), which contains a small barracks as well as the entrance to the dungeon, a shack for the miners outside the Shurdan-Raplay Egg Mine, a new guard tower by the boat dock, and a new shop.

I have also modified Fjorgier a bit (the crappy companion you get during the stage 3 quest), to make him a slightly more proper companion. He now warps (script based on Grumpy's Companion Project v1.3) and has companion share. He is also now classed as a guard. He does not leveling up, however, and he does not have the auto-healing feature present in most of my companion mods. This mod also features native support for Sri's Alchemy, in the form of ingredient jars for the new ingredients. This is disabled by default, but you can enable it by opening the console and typing "set RE_SAloaded to 1" (must be exact), minus the quotes.

Baratheon79 does a good job on his stuff, so although I've never tried this, I'm willing to bet it works well.

My character has a speed of about 75 or 80 and he can seriously run to rethan from balmora in 10-15 seconds. It's so easy. :D

Hlaalu is accesable, but not when you want slaves. I had to go all the way to Sadreth Mora to get the slaves, and then walk them all the way beck to Balmora! They are really slow and stupid. I would walk 5 feet, and they would be 4 feet back. Then, they were always running into rocks and the I had to go back and get them. I hate Hlaalu now, and now I am building the Redoran fort for the first time! :D

zainsipilu is kinda hard to find. I finally found it by levitating over the area.. I think the reason that slaves are not convenient for a Hlaalu stronghold is that Hlaalu don't support slavery..
