If you can craft wands, and don't mind losing a bit of experience, that can be a fast way to earn some cash. You can make a 1st level spell wand for about 350 GP and 30 EXP, then sell it for 550-600 GP. Make a bunch of those and sell 'em then fight one or two more battles and you've gotten all the experience back. Of course, the fastest way is to just go deeper into the temple and find pricy magic items, but this will work too.

Also, it helps to identify magic weapons and armor, and - if you're not using them - to sell them to certain merchants.

For instance, these are the best people in Hommlet to sell things to.

Jewelry and gems: Nira the jeweler in NW Hommlet (by the church).

Metal weapons and armor: Brother Smith (this guy should almost be a dead give-away).

Wooden Weapons (including spears, bows, javelins, and greatclubs/mauls): The carpenter in the NW portion of Hommlet.

Cloth objects (particularly magic cloaks you won't use): Jinnerth the Halfling tailor, middle of town (A bit north of the Wicked Wench Inn)

Leather items: Jakk the leatherworker (Just southeast of the Wicked Wench).

Other magical items (scrolls, wands, etc.): Burne in the Tower (East portion of Hommlet).

If you sell magical items of certain categories to those merchants, you'll fetch a HANDSOME price for them. Next thing you know, your party will likely have wallets the size of a giant's thigh, each!

Good point, Galuf. I should have mentioned that. Certainly identify every magic item before selling it, and sell only to those who will pay top dollar (and have somebody with lots of appraise be the guy talking to the merchants).

Calmert in the church also pays good money for magic things like scrolls, so you can return to Hommlet north, hit Calmert, then the cabinetmaker, the jeweler, the tailor, the blacksmith, and the leatherworker, then bop into the inn for a rest.

If you're wondering if you're getting the best price, the good one is twice the worse one, so if you see two offers that are different, the better one is the best you're gonna do, and if you see the same price twice, chances are fairly good they're both half what you can get somewhere else.

You can also add a + or two to a +1 item you find and sell it for much more as well.

A question of liquidity

Hello,

I tried your strategy of making wands and selling them for more cash. However, when I try to sell the wand, I always see an offer that is less than the amount of gold I spent crafting the wand. And I know I'm going to the right people to sell the wand, i.e. Burne. In your example, how did u manage to make a wand for 35o gold and sell it for 550-600 GP?

It's very likely that this little oversight by Troika has been corrected in one or more mods. Are you running co8 or Livonya or anything besides patch 2 and temple.zip? I'd say that's probably the reason. The value of the wand is SUPPOSED to be dependent on how many charges are left, and many have complained about this, so I'd expect it to have been fixed somewhere by now.

To answer your question, I usually go over to Calmert (there's a line of best-price shops, from the leatherworker to the smith to the tailor to the jeweler to the cabinet maker to calmert, which run the gamut of all the possible items to sell); and I'm running only patch 2 and temple.zip.

Money, money, money!

Ahhh, yes, that's probably it! It would make sense that if u use the wand, the fewer the number of charges left in it, the less valuable it is. I'm running the co8 mod, plus Patch 2 and temple.zip. So I guess I can't cheat and make wands and sell them for above cost?

Yes, I'm aware of the best-price shops for different items. Calmert and Burne seem to buy ur magic wands and scrolls for the most GP, as Galuf noted. <sigh> oh, well, I guess I'm gonna have to rape and pillage the countryside for GP so I can craft some kickass weapons of mass destruction!

Thanks for the advice!

Well, if you're lamenting the existence of a cheat, why not just use the code from the thread below this to get some extra cash?

An honest day's pay

Oh, no, I'm not lamenting about the lack of a cheat. But I found out how to make magic items and sell them for above cost. The key is having someone with a high Appraise skill modifier. Once you have a modifier of at least 5 or better, the magic items can be sold for above cost. Thus, you got a way to earn money.

Ah, so that might have been the problem. I always have my mouthpiece with full ranks in appraise, so I typically have 5-10 ranks plus 4 for stats, giving me a +9-14 or so every time.
