Tanks for Hire

Hey guys.

Back in the ole BG1 days myself and a mate took our best fighter type tanks and pitted them toe to toe in the first ever ARENA event. Simple stuff, just stand two characters toe to toe and let em go at it. I think i may still have the links from the ole website somewhere .....

I know the purists will be rolling thier eyes at this time, but it was just a bit of fun and was never meant to be anything more than that. I enjoy the RPG side of the BG series too ;) .

I'm about to play some of my ole characters through ToB for the first time and can't wait to see how my 'tanks' go. Got a few (not just fighters/barbarians etc...) but some other classes whom are also adept at duelling. My mate still has quite a few characters, and i can see the possibility of another fun night of the ARENA comming up.

So do any of you have characters that may like to take part? Tanks or not, all are welcome. Its a fun thing and nothing too serious (just basically for my own enjoyment). NO characters will be made availalble to anyone else and all characters will be stored on my PC only. So don't worry about your pride and joy being spread about to anyone.

I've also considered making a 'marksman' event for the archers and missile users out there.

So, any characters whom would like to make the trip (feel free to write a small bio and include custom portraits) then send em my way. Fighters/Paladins/Rangers/monks/Clerics/Mages all kits and classes are welcome -

Rypien@optusnet.com.au

I'll be more than happy to keep you posted on the format results when it is eventually run.

NO HACKED CHARACTERS OR WEAPONS ETC......... must be legit. Please don't design characters or edit characters specifically for this, it would be good to send characters whom you have used through your travels and have a bit of 'history'.

cheers ;)

Ok, the NO HACKED characters is understandable, but what about the NO WEAPONS? My ranger from years ago dualed Crom Faeyr and Foebane. If he doesn't get these, what would he get? Non-magical weapons and armor? Provide more detail please.

Are item mod items considered hacked?

G'day guys.

I'd really like to see characters as they would be in an original (non mod) BGII game. No TeamBG related hacks. Having non original items equiped would not really be acceptable.

But in saying that ...... I'd still be very interested in seeing characters who have been modified or whom hold hacked items or whom have been modified regarding kit classes etc.... But i'd be a little bit suspicious of them being pitted up against non hacked/modded characters and items. I guess i could set up a seperate class if an arean type event were to be held......

But as i said earlier, i'm probably more interested in seeing original characters who fall into the original game with no modifications in any way shape or form.

So you're saying that Crom Faeyr is fine, because that's in the original game, but the Caromyr +6, which is upgraded in one of the item mods from +5, isn't acceptable, right?

If so, that's pretty fair... Flail of Ages +5 is ok, since that's native to the game, but Celestial Fury upgraded to +5 isn't, since that's done by a mod...

(I am correct in my thinking, right?)

Carsomyr +6 isn't done in a mod, it's done in ToB by Cespenar.

I'll speak slowly ....load BGII SoA or ToB onto your PC. Right, you can use anything in the game that is as the original rules intended. If you have a mod installed, or hacked weapons, or any unoriginal items equiped than you are NOT eligible for this event.

clear as mud.

Joluv and Deidre items allowed? You never said anything about these. Only reason I ask is because these come standard for some people's versions of the game.

Guess i've been out of the loop for too long :D . I'm not too sure as i've never considered that some versions of the game are somehow different. Could you explain about the different versions mate as i've not heard of it before? Cheers.

Well, let's see here. Joluv and Deidre are bonus merchants which were found in the Collector's Edition(?) and the Pre-Order edition of BG2. Deidre sells a bunch of rare magical items while Joluv sells items found in Icewind Dale.

But it seems that if someone downloads the official patch they get both of these merchants free. But it's up to you whether you want to alow them or not.

Here's what I believe are the cheesiest items in the bunch.

Robe of Vecna - Deidre
Equipped abilities
AC: base set to 5
Improves casting speed by 4
+10% Magic Resistance
Weight: 3
Only usable by:
Mage (single, dual, & multi-class)

(obviously meant for Mages and Bards)
Dak'kon's Zerth Blade - Deidre
Equipped Abilities:
+1 AC bonus
able to memorize one extra 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level mage spell
THACO: +2 bonus
Damage: 1D10+2
Speed Factor: 2

Defender of Easthaven +2 - Joluv
Equipped Abilities:
+1 AC bonus
+20% resistance to slashing, piercing, and blunt damage
THACO: +2 bonus
Damage: 1D6 + 2
Speed Factor: 5

Vhailor's Helm
Special Abilities (once per day): Cast Simulacrum

That's all I can think of. If you're still a little at a loss of what to do, I'm sure if you do a search on the forum (SoA) for bonus merchants, somethings bound to pop up.

Yeah, Deidre was Collector's Edition, and Joluv was pre-order edition. Deidre sells mainly PS:T inspired items (with a few other items added in) and is in the Adventurer's Mart, whereas Joluv sells IWD related items and is in the Copper Coronet.

I don't believe the merchants are actually in the official patch. However, the relevant files (both of them) required in your override directory to have these merchants can be downloaded in a number of places on the internet.

Cool.

I'd have no problems with a character who has items from either of these two.

So far i've got 5 of my own characters whom i'm keen to enter into some sort of toe to toe stoush. Three are typical 'tanks', while the other two may not do too good at toe to toe in an arena type setting, but are not too shabby during gameplay. I'm not only interested in seeing huge hp fighters with massive damage and an awesome THACO (although i do love em :D ), but it would be good if a few lesser know kits/classes made the journey to my email Rypien@optusnet.com.au ;) . (include custom portraits and short bio if you like)

An old BG1 mate of mine has another 6 characters currently playing through ToB again and he is keen to enter them all into this little fun duelling event. I've recieved two characters from other people on the net so far. Keep em comming and when i have quite a few i'll set a date and run some duels.

Don't forget that this is a FUN event and i know its a little cheesy and not really hardcore rpg .... but its not meant to be. I'll accept any characters as long as they fall withing the guidelines as we have spoken about prevously. Keep em comming guys :)

specs?

Do you have any specifications you want to follow- ie- max # of xp points, max level, ranged vs. melee, etc.?

I'd definately leave it open to all levels of characters without any restrictions (short of being hacked or if the xp cap has been removed). Low level characters, or fully fledged gods, all are welcome.

Being a toe to toe type event, i'd expect that ranged weapons would be out of the question. I've tinkered with the idea of an 'archer' type ranged event but never gotten around to it. Even imagined running a teo to toe event where the characters have two rounds to cast enchancements or take potions before going into combat.

Remembering that this is an OFFLINE style of event. All characters will not be distributed, all characters will be held with privacy in mind and not made available online or altered in any way.
