Game crashes when underwater in Manaan

First of all, I have the infamous Radeon 9600XT which causes crashes on every blink of an eye with this game. All the game requirements are passed otherwise, and I installed the 1.3 patch which helped a lot. The game doesn't crash so often anymore, but now I'm in Manaan. Everything's fine when I'm indoors, but when I get out to the seabase, BOOM. It crashes.
With a lot of cursing, quick saving and rebooting I managed to get to the other building, where there's a man and a woman who almost kill me in the airlock, but who then tell me of the possibilities to save the day. Yadayada, I get back outside and when I take the first tiny little step, the game crashes! I haven't moved two meters from the airlock, because it always crashes.
Any ideas which could help me? I've stripped everything from the grapics menu to minimum, but it still doesn't help. Crash, crash, crash. I'm. So. Stuck.
