Journal : Solo Wild Mage

I recently started a solo ... and wondered what could be fun to play. I already soloed as a Swashy/Mage (It looks like a weaker FMT), and I wanted something really different; a char who can't do everything. I've watched all classes... and found out that I would enjoy playing a sorceror, but since it's one of the best character in the game (beside dual classed char like Kensai/Thief, Kensai/Mage, Berserker/Cleric, Wizard Slayer/Thief, etc.), and since I wanted a more challenging go-through, I looked at specialists mages. When I saw "Wild Mage", I immediately fell in love with this class.

I rolled my char (Nothing great... I just picked the 4th or 5th roll, a decent one) :
Str : 12 (A few points here, to be able to walk with a full plate in my inventory, nothing more)
Dex : 19 (Yeah, btw I'm an elve, and I need a good AC as a soloer)
Con : 16 (I heard that 17 and 18 Con just give bonuses to fighters...)
Int : 18 (Main stat)
Wis : 17 (For wishes)
Cha : 8 (I've put the rest here... there's also a minimum for elves I think)

So I'm now starting Irenicus' Dungeon with my Lawful Neutral (Ferret :D ) Elven Female Wild Mage, Alhana.

I killed mephits and goblins pretty easily. The ogre mage was a real joke... he died from a Chromatic Orb. For the golems, I used Spider Spawn (or something like that) with myself throwing Minute Melf's Meteors.

The Duergards were a piece of cake too... 2 Fireballs and a few magic missile later, they were toasted. I managed to remember the trap in the North-East corridor and to avoid it, and I killed the guy with the bastard sword + 1 with a few summons and my last spells (Melf's Acid Arrows and 1 Laroch Minor Drain (Innate)).

After this, I killed the Othyug (sp?) with Melf acid arrows, and managed to get everything in both chambers with traps. I also agreed to help those Dryads. After having acquired the statue that lead to the elemental plane of the air, I've managed to kill all mephits here pretty easily, and to bring back the lamp to the Djinn.

The second level of Irenicus' Dungeon is were I started to have strange effects with my casting (I have a few wild surges before... but mainly "Spell cast normaly"). Entering the portal room, my first spell (Raide deads) went made... and I shooted a Fireball instead (pretty cool... killed a few mephits and hurt those portals). After this, I used my spiders summons to keep mephits busy while Alhana was shooting spells (Acid Arrows, MMM and Fire Arrows) to the 4 portals.

The clone went down fast, and all other minor opponents until Frennedan. I opened his cage, and cast all my offensives spells left (not many... only 3-4). After those few spells, he's Near Dead. Then, I try to use my Nahal's Reckless Dweomers (only spells left but a mirror image and a knock) and here's the effet I get :
- Roll 4 more time
- Healed
- Spell cast normaly
- Invisible
- Roll 4 more time
- Itchy?
- Spell cast normaly
- Hasted
- Roll 2 more time
- Dizzy?
- What's in my pockets?

That was funny... I am now fightning an invisible/hasted/almost fully healed Frennedan with only 4 Nahal's Reckless Dweomers. I managed to kill him, because one of my Dweomers gave me a 2 extra rolls. A "Spell cast at double level", with a Chromatic Orb can be deadly... =)

After this, I managed to kill the vampire in the North room before it vanishes (Nice XP... :D ). The fight with those dwarves was quite easy too... not talking about those Goblins... Piece of cake really!

After having exited the dungeon, I did sold a few items, had my ferret steal a certain ring from a certain person at the Adventurer Mart and entered the circus. I solved the riddle, managed to free the ogre (Aerie) and killed all illusions within the next room with a Dispel scroll (in a stash nearby... to easy!). I killed the ogre-mage (gnome illusionist) with a few spider summons and magic missiles.

I am now heading towards the copper coronet... Wish me luck =)

I really enjoy Wild Mage a wild surges... it's increadibly unpredictable and funny! I enjoyed my fight with Frennedan the doppleganger...

Interesting... The Wild Mage intrigued me but also scared me off. I'm looking forward to hearing more about how a game is actually played and how that character survives.

That is interesting. I've always been a bit frigthened to play the class as well (as I imagine the surges can kill strategy). I'm particularly interested in hearing how it holds up as a sold class. Keep us posted.

Ok... after a little shopping spray, my Wild Mage is ready to head toward the Copper Coronet. After having talked to Gaelan (?), I headed into the copper coronet. Here I was asker for two quests (Firekraag and Nalia's), I was approched by the most annoying character of the game (Anomen) and I saw Minsc and Yoshimo for the 2nd time. I talked to the bar owner and told him I had money to spend. He immediatly opened the back room's door for me. Then I was on my way, walking in a dark corridor, and I finally opened a door. Here, a guard shouted at me and asked me to go back. I refused, hearing the laments of humans nearby.

Four of other guards came to help him, and two fighters and two spellcasters. They were trying to kill me! I started to cast a defensive spelll; and having memorized Stoneskin, I believe, saved my life this day. Then I started to use my spells on the spellcaster #1... but instead of a magic missile, a wild surge happened : A fireball. I was hurt and burned, but so were they! The fight continued despit our injuries, and I won, with the help of Fluffy, my Ferret, who lured a guard away. I used a spiderspawn spell to take out a mage (those spiders do great work!) and took the other 2 with my spells (mainly magic missiles and melf acid arrows). After a few wild surges, I finaly succeded to stun the enemy running after my ferret, and he climbed by itself into my backpack. I wounded the last guard with my staff, and killed him when he woke up with a Laroch Minor Drain (A gift from my father..)

After this, a slave, Hendak I believe, asked me for help. He explained that he was captive for months and was used as a Gladiator. He told me that, South of here was a beastmaster raising dangerous animals and creatures to fight the gladiators. He told me to go stealthy, because he's a dangerous man. I opened the door, and casted an invisibility spell. I walked in the arena, and found out a white wolve... this remembered me Nashkel, Beregost and Baldur's Gate... I had to hunt those wolves for their fur to survive. When his red eyes gazed in my direction... I was suprised. He breathed ice on me, even if I was invisible. I replyed with a Fire Arrows spell, thinking that fire will make him flee, but he jumped on me instead. I saved my life in Extremis, by releasing a wild surge from a Nahal's Reckless Dweomer. The explosion killed him, and left me badly wounded. After a little healing potion, I was refreshed and ready to go on. I entered a corridor with doors on every sides... I heard roars behind those doors. I walked until the end, and encountered the beastmaster Hendak was talking about.

The guy shouted to his animals to attack me. Suddently, all the 6 doors opened, and I was facing alot of wild animals : Bears, leopards, panther... and even some creater I remembered from my first adventure... but they seemed strange. Anyway, there was no time to waste : I killed the first animal with a succesfully controled wild surge that resulted in a chromatic orb powered up ("Spell cast at double level"). Then, I used a Chaos spell from my spellbook, and it worked fairly well. Two animals were still heading towards my direction, while the others were biting and hurting each others. The beastmaster was shooting at me, but was a poor archer... I dispatched the two animals attacking me with a Cone of Cold scroll found earlier on a guard (I already had buyed one at the Adventurer Mart). After 2 fireballs and a Raide Dead summon, the fight was over. The beastmaster was on the ground, bleeding, and his Panther, the one he called Tabitha I guess, was lying near him. All the other animals were toasted alive.. and the air smelled roasted flesh. I found a key on the beastmaster, and came back to Hendak and his companions. Once freed, another battle started. This time, it was against the Copper Coronet guards. Alot of them were affected by horror spells, so we just had to kill them while they were running arround in panic.

When I came to the main room, an archer was shooting at me unsucessfully due to my stoneskin, while Hendak killed Letinnian. I bringed down the archer, and congratulated myself for the good act I did : I freed 2 slaves, and 2 captive childrens (I believe they was used as food for the beasts... isn't horrible?). Hendak congratulated me too, but there was another problem : Other slavers... here, in the slums, were still running their business. I decided to go after them... after having rested a bit!

When I entered my room... I emptied my pockets and found out alot of new stuff I didn't remember to pick up! Strange Enough.... (Wild Surges : Gems! and Wild Surges : What's that in my pockets?... :D )

I will be reading this, mostly because I want to read about when a giant cow falls on your enemies. :) This is also making me want to hurry up and finish ToB with my Undead Hunter so I can get started on my own Wild Mage.

I once started a Wild Mage (although i didn't play very far with it), but I had the greatest luck with the wild surges in Irenicus' prison lvl 1 agains the duergars:

In a privious battle I had a wild surge ("what's in my pockets?") and found a scroll of horrid wilting which i instantly copied to my spell book. Now in the battle with the duergars I started by casting a web spell at my enemies. However the spell turned into a wild surge, which somehow gave me access to all the spells in my spellbook, including horrid wilting. So obviously I cast it on my foes, and voila! Insta-kill (at least pretty fast :D )

Wild Mage is really fun :D

Yeah, it is... but beware, Wild Surge : Hold, can be deadly... (happened to me in the slaver boat, in the slums).

I'm lacking of time to write/play, but I'll continue this Journal for sure.

the coolest thing that has ever happened to me with a wild mage happened today.

i was beefing up to fight firkraag, i wasn't really sure if i would be able to kill him cause my level is kind of low. so i cast all my protection spells and summoned an ogre, ettercap, and a dryad, then i cast reckless dweomer with the intention of attempting a simulacrum. needless to say the spell succeeded with a wild surge: area effect. my entire party and summoned creatures were duplicated! (with all their spell protections etc) so with a party of almost 20 i managed to beat the crap out of firkraag, and my actual party members were never even hit.

yes... wild mages are fun!
