I'm a huge fan of Elves and especially the Drow. The first books I read from the Forgotten Realms set were by R.A. Salvatore about Drizzt and his friends. I was fascinated by the Underdark and the Dark Elf culture and abilities. My favorite race is obviously the Drow for a lot of different reasons. I love that they get additional points in Charisman, Intelligence, and Dexterity; their magic resistance and immunity to sleep spells is very useful in Icewind Dale II. They are a powerful race, so it is understandable that they are considered two levels higher than normal humans and many other races. They make amazing wizards and clerics, as male and female characters respectively. I didn't approve that Icewind Dale II didn't include Lloth as a deity for clerics to choose from, but it is a great game for including the drow nonetheless. I've given some of my reasons, though only a few. What are your favorite races and why? Do you like to play particular races/subraces more than others? Does your favorite race to play differ from your favorite race in general and why?

I'm a fan of elves, mainly because of the dexterity bonus, and free proficiencies in bows and swords ( I think that feature is included in this game, anyway). I find ranged combat to be ridiculously effective in games using this engine.

A pity I cannot vote for two I like humans the most, but half-elves are really cool, too.

Drow.. the coolest and the best

I really like aasimar and tiefling characters, they're better than the normal races and fun to role play without being over powered.

I've personally always found it difficult justifying many of the options for the underdark races from a role playing perspectives or creating plausible backgrounds for why they came to the surface in the first place.

i like aasimar and tieflings as well. when i play aasimar i am a noble warrior who is wanting to prove himself, when i play a tiefling i am a humble monk who is greatly misunderstood.

Deep Gnomes.

Magic resist + improved AC = nearly unstoppable.

Dwarves are obviously better than the other races. Stregnth, endurance, strong work ethic, cool weapons, and a well developed attitude are things everybody should strive towards.

For IWD II, I also play humans, tieflings and 1/2 orcs a lot due to their bonuses.

For the most part I hate both elves and Dwarves for the simple reason that they are far too stereotyped- elves poncing and fannying about in the woods being arrogant and opinionated and dwarves reclusive and foul-temepered with a beard most bears would feel shamed by- Tolkien has a lot to answer for.
Anyway to actually answer the question, I like the idea of playing a fallen angel and the nearest thing to it would be an evil asimaar, putting those do-gooding self-righteous paladins in their place

I'll have to speialize on this one, i like Drow, Tiefling and Moon Elf. The rest just plainly suck in my point of roleplaying view...

Halflings are really cool, dudes

Halflings are (the best) very useful creatures. They have so many useful abilities like Sneak Attack, Hide In Shadoes, and Search (for traps).

yeh halflings rule. I love playing ghostwise especially. They're so kl to play as. Most of the 'little people' i.e. gnomes, halflings and dwarves are fun. The other races all seem a little bland to me. Elves are, as said before, like they've always been represented. Humans are just plane boring. Half-Orcs are okay, but they don't give you much option, just a brutal beast, which isnt that gr8 for roleplaying.
To remedy these problems I like to create big contrasts with characters. Half orc priests and rogues, drow fighters and rangers, dwarf wizards, halfling barbarians. gnomish druids. The're just more fun to play as.

Favorite Sub Race

I am still in my first run through. Doing two different style parties. Hard to pick one as my favorite since each of those I am trying have great abilities and benefits. But I am probably having the most fun with my Sverfneblin fighter. The extras are so good that this subclass has the biggest handicap (3 levels I think) of any of them. But I think they are well worth it, he makes a great scout (using invisibility, being a natural ability it "seems" to last longer than the one my mage casts). Plus having a fighter able to use mirror image is great (it lasts a pretty decent amount of time too), he comes through most fights unscathed or with minimal damage. He also ties up a couple of the bad guys so they aren't hitting on the others. Not bad for a front row grunt. That handicap is stiff though.

personally i find some of the races just plain boring or stereotyped.i tend not to play for power but for rolelaying. Humans are just plain vannilla and have no quirks. I avoid playing them at all costs. aasimar are pretty much xactly the same. Teiflings are cool and i tend to have one of them all the time. the whole half-demon thing makes for some great roleplaying. I usually use them as mages. Elves are all a bit boring really and, as said before, very sterotyped. Except drow. Drow rule. I usually have a drow theif somewhere, since they make for charactrerful playing. Dwarves too are sterotyped, except for, and i may get mobbed for saying this, druegar who are again pretty fun to play as rogues and are characterful. gnomes are boring (deep gnomes are OKAY i guess). half-elves are even worse. Half elves should all be shot. Then shot again just to make sure. HalfORCs are gd tho. again very fun to play as clerics and mages. I usually have a very thick half orc mage trying to be very sophisticated. very fun to play as. Halflings are my favourites tho. i've already said why

I usually play a fairy folk party. Not always will they be totally or partially of good alignment. They are beings in trial with nature and forces beyond there immediate control. Thus I like half-elves and elves. Mostly wood or moon elves. Shield dwarfs. Ghostwise I have played. Belive it or not in my years of playing RPG's I never had a drow, svirfneblin, or duergar. My next part is going to have probably like 2 drow at least and a tiefling. Maybe a complete underdark group. Deep gnome and all. Derro would be nice. I never had a monk, or a sorceror either. I will both to the party. In Black Ise games I never had a half orc either.

underdark groups are quite cool but there is little variation between the characters. druegar and deep gnomes are very similar, and in terms of roleplaying they all end up having a similar background. but still they are quite cool

I like wild elves and half-orcs. I actually played a party with two wild elf sorcerors and 2 orc barbarians without any multiclassing... didn't finish though... the heal times drove me nuts for some reason.

From a power perspective Aasimaars and Svirfs form the backbone of the more insane builds out there. Female drows maybe.

Humans all the way. I'm way too humanist. After that is half-elves or elves, in that order.

I am completely biased against smallies, save for dwarves, and even then I only used one dwarf in the party.
