Okay, what should I do?

So, I'm going to be playing in a new campaign.
I have never played with these people before but this is what I know.
They like low-level games, we're starting at 1.
They're not into lots of crazy classes and whatnot.
They're not munchkinish.
There will be 3 PCs, I don't know anything about the other 2.
So they're pretty classic types. We're playing 3e.
I don't know anything about what the game world will be like.
What kind of character should I be?
I'm open for suggestions and discussion.

cant go wrong with a monk. most well rounded class i can think of. you have your fighter/rouge in there, and the spell-like ablities. and a monk hands out those awsome lines like "you disturb my meditation, like a peble disturbs the stillness of the pond" i think its great.

I've thought about that, but a monk isn't terribly exciting to play. Maybe I'm missing something. What kind of spin should I put on it?

Personally, I hate Monks, but that's just a matter of personal preference.
You could always be a Cleric. Healing magic is always welcome, and with all the different deities available, you can customize the Cleric quite a bit. You can also go whole-hog into the portfolio of your deity, and be a very atypical Cleric while still filling the cleric's main roles (healer and undead turner). I was a Cleric of Olidammara/Rogue multiclass once, and it was a blast. Equally entertaining was the Cleric of Wee Jas/Necromancer multiclass. But you don't have to multiclass to highlight your deity's teachings or what have you.
Granted, if you don't like being a support character, you could also go the way of the Fighter. The vast assortment of weapons in the Player's Handbook allow for a great deal of individuality among Fighters. You could be a heavily armored tank with a massive two-handed weapon, or you could wear light armor, take a lot of feats that increase your mobility, and be a knife-fighter.
Other classes allow for variations as well, but they typically seem to end up being either nature lovers, savage brutes, stoic do-gooders, arcane artillery, or trapspringers.

All good suggestions. I played an elven cleric for my last character and I don't know if I would want to again.
I'm lost. The only way I want to be a fighter is if the other two are support types and we need a frontman, then I would be like an Army captain or paladin or something and lead the party.
Anyone know any fun ways to play a total tank? I like the idea of being able to take insane amounts of damage.

Well, a tank is a tank is a tank, so you'll probably want to focus on a roleplayed personality to make the character stand out. You could take a bunch of ranks in Intimidate and play him as bold, boisterous, and... well, intimidating. Accents always add quick and easy flavour to a character.
Also, the high armor class and the high amount of hit points will allow you to do daring derring-dos, so you could toss a little bit of recklessness into the mix as well.
As a general way of playing, I like to try to do as much as I can without having to make actual die rolls. If you interact with the environment a lot, encounters become a lot more interesting. Cave-ins, landslides, pitfalls, and the like add a lot of variety. If the DM demands some kind of die roll to determine the success of such things, you could take ranks in Profession: Soldier or something like that.

A tank is a tank etc.
Interesting. Without knowing the how the other players will react, it's hard to say. If they are good role-players and not prone to taking offense from a "character's" (as opposed to a player's) personality, playing a tank like Sir Lancelot on an ego trip could be fun. Or perhaps a thief(rogue)/cleric of Loki might be an interesting combo.

Loki... Olidammara... same difference.

Unless, of course, he's lawful evil. Then he only steals for the good of himself. Throw in a little chaos and you can steal just for the fun of it.

Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming. I'm an experienced player and DM, but I just have a little bit of something similar to writer's block.
I got a little more info today.
I still don't know the religious system or how stats will be generated. THe stats isn't such a big deal because I can rank them in order of preferrence and assign them when I get them.
I found out that one player will probably play a fighter type of some sort, so the tank is probably out.
The other player played a rogue in their last game and hated it so she will probably play something other than a rogue.
I would play one, but I want a really good spin on it. It has to be great though. I used to play a lot of rogues and I'm getting tired of it. SO bring on the pizazz.
Also, we will only have 3 PCs, that means each one needs to pack a punch. I need something really useful. I am starting to think about a Gnome Rogue, that way I get some illusion magic to start with. I'm really not sure though.
I'm assuming the party will be mostly good. I'm looking for probably and alignment of NG, CG, N, or CN. I really like lawful characters, but I am in the mood for something different.

How about the things we discussed earlier about useage of spells?
A creative wizard is always cool.

True, I've thought of that. I could amaze them with that. They're newbs basically.
We're starting at level 1 though, how can I beef him up so I don't die?

Rogues are my favourite.
In my last game I played a Drow Rogue and multiclassed to Necromancer later on (After 5-6 levels as Rogue)..
It was a very long campaign because I even reached a Prestige Class (Arcane Trickster) which suited me perfectly, pick-pocketing from 30 ft. rules!
I never played a druid, rumors say it's fun... maybe next time...

My wizards always have a high constitution, plus they can run very hard...
Keep a bow at handy and stay out of trouble.
A cheese tactic is to take the toad familiar for the extra 3 hitpoints; only usefull at low levels though.

@Faruz, that sounds fun, but it wouldn't fly in this camp.
@ Rob, The Toad might be a good idea, plus some con. I gcould start with 8 or 9 Hp! What races do you suggest. Nothin funky.

I'm curently playing a gnoimishbard. Very fun character, im learning new things every session.
The bard has tons of options, he does very nice damage with his bow, can buff a little, but i basicly use him for manipulation ahum.....conversation

I've thought of a bard, but it's hard for me to pretend to be that outgoing.

How about a barbarian? They got a supreme hp and good attack bonus. They also get more skillpoints than a fighter, unless you give him your lowest stat to int. With some skillpoints and a good con,str and dex he would be a great "meatshield".
