X Marks the Spot?

I noticed on the huge fold out map there are 10 X's that I counted. They're all over water, and I was just wondering if they had any significance.
Those that are in the water are either shipwrecks or sunken shrines. Nothing extremely important, just some nice hidden stuff that you might want to check out.
The ones on the land should be the three places where the House strongholds are built during the game.
