Different country like different sports, for instance here in Europe soccer is very big, but in the US noone seems to care about it. Same with basketball in the Netherlands, it hardly gets any attention here, while Americans seems to love it. So the question is which sports are big in your country.

Well, I'm a US citizen, and, in my area specifically, there's obviously interest in the proffesional teams of all sorts, but, if I had to choose one sport that I would say the most people here (and across the US) paid attention to at a given point throughout the year, I'd have to go with NCAA *college Division One* basketball!

So not NBA basketball? I always thought that was very populair.

Well, NBA basketball IS enormously popular, but I'd theorize that EVERYONE roots for there "home" team during March Madness (or adopts a new one), more so then any other sport. I've talked with alot of people who refuse to watch the NBA because, more and more, people seem to be viewing it as less "Team" oriented (an analysis I find hard to disagree with). When I used to volunteer at a nursing home (which was really great - I met some amazing elderly people there, really inspiring), the TV room was PACKED full on college game days - old alums would be decked out in team colors, the whole nine yards - they might not remember all the words to the school fight song, but by god they could still hum along!

well, i live in norway, and soccer(fotball as we call is) dominate. But we also has winter sports, like (crap whats the english word for "langrenn" )... Hockey is the only other sport that get some attention.

Cross country or something isn't it?

I know what you mean, sort of skiing but then you don't go downhill and you have to make speed yourself. Looks exhausting to me.

I'm guessing you mean cross-country skiing. Basically it's a land race on snow? It's not popular in the US really because the terrain and climate isn't really right for it, but I think we do competein Olympic events like that.

IN Florida it's basketball. Probably an even split with NBA/NCAA. College football is really popular here too because we have some good teams in Florida. NFL is big as well(professional american football). MY favorite sport is Major League Baseball, but it's really unpopular in my area.

Hockey... Anyone could be excused for thinking it is the national sport, but that is actually lacrosse.

People are also heavily into US style 'football' here, since Vancouver has a football team as well as a hockey team.
I don't mind watching hockey on occasion but I've never seen the point of "football." IMO, *real* men play rugby....

It isn't European soccer (Africa, South America, Middle East, Asia also plays it hugely) - it is simply called Football, the game you play with your feet, as opposed to the American type of (I'm using my *hands* to *hold* the ball and *cast* the ball and *pushing* my opponents)-football.

Football is huge in Denmark Naturally as most any country.... but Badminton and Handball are also huge, and lately Icehockey has grown in popularity as well.
It basically (as I'd guess is true about most countries) comes down to which sports your national teams do well in. We even had surges of Curling once during some Olympic Games, because out team did well out of nowhere.

I know it's called football here in Europe, but I was thinking about my American fellows, so it wouldn't be misunderstood.

Its big in certain parts of the US...mostly the Mid Atlantic.

Ah, so it's a BIG meal (In other words: I'd like to know what lacrosse is too, but unlike Brynn, I use tools with which it only took me 2 seconds to find out.)

I have always wanted to play lacrosse, it looks so interesting.

In sweden it is fotball, like almost everywhere else, and ice hockey.

When other sports recieve attention it is mostly focused around a single person; golf, table tennis and slalom gets big because a swede is doing well, or have done well in the past.

It is called football in South America, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Europe. That is, the whole world except the US and Canada.
