Soloing question

Well, two questions, actually.
The first - if you want to try soloing as any class other than a mage-type or thief-type, what do you do about the huge numer of traps and locked doors?
Second, has anyone ever tried soloing, except picking up NPCs to do their quests and then dropping them as soon as their quest is over? This way, you could do every single quest in the game.

Well, frankly, people usually either avoid the traps when they know the general location (the priest spell "find traps" will pinpoint them) or force their way through, counting on their saves or hitpoints to survive the trap and their strength to open locked doors.
Of course, there is an ease of use mod that removes all locks and traps to make soloing easier.
As to soloing itself, search the forums for soloing - it's a very common practice after going through the game several times. There was even a thread that had people picking one of every possible class combination to try soloing them all as a group.
Good luck with your game!

***Minor Spoilers***
I'm currently soloing with a monk (not quite sure why, I've already done it before and got a bit bored

). But I usually just walk though them and soak up the damage when I can't get around them, or usually avoid chests with traps. I buff up my strength to open up chests and the locked doors. Usually if I can't open one it's no problem, just move on. Gold isn't much of a problem when you solo because you've only got one character to buy for

Haul out the best loot from each expidition and it quickly adds up.
I do the same with any class I solo with if they don't have trap detecting/disarming abilities. Just soak up the damage (no choice really). Just be careful of those charm traps!
You will ALWAYS be able to open up a locked door to escape a dungeon you're trapped in by forcing them. Mind flayer dungeon in the underdark is one example. You get locked in the pit for your final "match", you will be able to force the door with any character.
As to have I picked up NPC's just to complete their quests? No. When I solo I do it completely by myself. There's always that big temptation to take Yoshimo at the start and steal Ribald's ring of regen (big help when solo and you have no heal spells), but I never do

If I can't steal it myself I just leave it. But that's just me, it's your game. If you want to do it for the roleplay value then I say go for it

It'd really only be worth it for the RP value as you hit the experience cap during your normal gameplay without the extra quests.

Any warriortype has pretty much HP and can take some damage while forcing up a lot of locks.
Priests can heal themselves, but I'm not sure what to do against locks with them. Well, as you don't really need to open any lock in the game, besides those who can be forced by anyone, there's not real need to open locks.
Thieves or mages are excellent solo classes in any single- dual- och multi-class aspect though...

Traps fall into two types, Magic and Physical; fighters have the ability to take a huge amount of physical damage. So fighters have constitution as their saving grace, but it's more often the classes that have high magic resistance that are better solo choices.

Then... How 'bout Wizard Slayer...? xD

But the problem with taking a pure class is that usually you are strong in one area, but lacking in another. For this reason Kensai-Mages are popular because you have Melee and Magic covered, and Preist spells aren't essential. So, a pure wizard slayer may not be the best option when it comes to the fights, which are more important than traps. For this reason, a really fun solo class is a bard, here is a thread showing just how powerful solo skalds can be.
http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5806
So if you are looking to solo, it is best to cover more than one area, as you have no one to help you cover the rest.

I was just joking about the Wizard Slayer (although dual-classed to a thief he can become very strong), and mentioning him in association to someone being able to resist most traps as he both have loads of HP and nice magical resistance.

Yeah I know, but I was just making sure that things didn't get out of hand with people focusing on traps, as they aren't that big a deal. You lose health, you drink potion or sleep, then continue.
That said, if you really worry about traps you can try a fighter/thief/mage or a swashbuckler/mage, as both combinations allow you to get past traps.

A mage can easily deal with traps (stoneskin, Spell Immunity) and locked doors (knock) you know... there's no need for a thief component and your character will level up faster without a second class hindering leveling.

I'm just asking because I wanted to try soloing as a bard (or one of the bard kits) just for a challenge and a bit of fun. Like I said though, without any way to deal with traps or locks, they might become a bit of a nuisance, and I know some could easily kill me.

Stoneskin do wonders against physical-damage traps (arrow-launching type).
Spell immunity (insert spell type... so Evocation for a Magic Missile trap) will protect you to almost every single magical traps.
The only exceptions for this is summoning traps (There's one in Chateau Irenicus, one in the Lower Tombs... I don't recall of any other) and AoE traps (Cloudkill... there's one in spellhold (when you're playing cat & mices with your favorite vampire) and a few others spread in the game...).
Traps WON'T be a problem for any mage or bard, if you know how to use them. Locked doors/chests won't too.. since you can cast "knock" on them... you'll only have to rest a bit after a few locked doors/containers.

I guess I'll have to get used to resting a lot then. The way I play, I pretty much wait until I've used up every single spell I have, and everyone has low HP before I'll submit to resting, unless of course I'm doing a quest of some sort that requires me to rest for a day.

I'm not certain if this works, but you could try using summons to take the hits for floor traps. That way you don't need to worry those ones, and only have to take the hits for the other ones.
P.S. Congratulations on going with the bard. You will find it is much more rewarding then Kensai-Mage or Beserker-Mage etc.
Good luck!

Summons doesn't trigger any traps. I'm pretty sure they doesn't, as they never ever have for me. But I could be wrong, it's not like I've tried if very much.

No, summoned critters will not trigger traps--though you'd think they should. But the chances for cheese to avoid traps and ambushes this way is simply too great.

Only 1 trap is activated by monsters (summoned ones).

It's in Spellhold (the wall-trap that can crush you to insta-death is triggered by summons too)

Thats one thing I disliked.... IMO, monsters should be able to trigger traps as well.
