Alright, for all you thieves out there...
What's the biggest backstab you've ever done...BG1 or 2?
Mine's 101...by my main char...
Coran did 100 with the Titan strength potion in BG1...

this topic is alread existing (thanx to Bordin Steelaxe IIRC) but anyway:
with a critical or without?
100 in BG1 would be much for a non-critical, but with a potion it's easy, for the potion itself dealt out 70. Once did 80 without potion or critical in BG1, must have been a Lucky Strike(TM).
101 in BG2 is not that much because of the awesome equipment available...check former topic for valid records...

Str bonus is applied after backstabb multiplier, so even 25 str would give "only" 14 to damage.

yes, in theory. BG2 was said (in the promo-time) to apply the STR-bonus after multipliing but these high backstabs wouldn't be possible with the STR excluded. Without any potions or criticals I never had backstabs under 60, mostly 75-90, some times more.
In BG1 the STR-bonus was multiplied, I'm sure about that. Bioware wanted to alter this but didn't touched it for some reason.
btw. a funny thing: The whole German version of D&D 2nd edition is buggy, because according to the rulebook (which I have right before me), STR-boni are applied before multipliing. Played this many years, even on Game conventions.

Critical Hit!!! can't see how you could do that without a critical hit

yup, critical hit
btw is 158 damage the limit for backstabs?
it's a bit strange that genesiss and me did the exact same amount of damage.

Don't know if thats the limit...never got one that high again...got a few 90's and lower 100's but mostly 50's to 70's

...strange indeed but possible. AFAIK there's no such thing as a limit on that, maybe theoretically. My best was 194 WITH a critical (blood and gibs all around like Quake3:Arena) but that's far from the record. IIRC highest without critical was about 108 or 110, highest with critical was beyond 200, like 212 or so.

I'd guess that fighter/thief's would be able to do that high...my mage/thief just didn't quite pull it together i guess

158...mage/thief...then I AM impressed! Had an elven mage/thief once, but he never crushed like that, maybe I was too soft with him...
nevertheless this one is sneaky. I loved this combo for sheer variety of possibilities...maybe I should search for the savegame...

Damnit how did you Backstab with a Katana, I was trying it and got that my weapon was too unstable or some crap like that.

In BG 1 my fighter/thief (dualed to thief at 6) made 108 as max (not sure if that was a critical but I think it was).
Funny enough, in BG 2 his max is ... also at 158! This one was a critical hit, no potions used.

Just go hide in the shadows and stand behind someone (backstab you know, stab in the back not in his head)..then attack him with a shortsword/katana/longsword/dagger/other backstab weapons i forgot.

Just 'cos its slashing don't mean it can't backstab (longswords can too).

BTW my Mage/Thief did realy sweet backstabs only when his STR was enhanced by using a belt...ogre gauntlets or some potion or spell...otherwise with his original 18 str he could only muster around 50-60 on critical hits
