Buck, I unfortuneatly am not old enough to be allowed to donate online, but will re-double my efforts to click adds, and purchase things from sponsers. To help, you might have to add pop up ads though, even if we don't like them, they might be needed...

Have you thought about spreading the site out a bit more? Is it on a lot of the search engines? What about even find some sites where you can get some free advertisement? Or even one of those Top 50 type sites. Or even join a web ring! Even though my site is rarely visited now a days ( :( ) I will post a link to GB on it, and maybe see if that can help any. Also, with your permission, I wouldn't mind spreading the site around to other web sites, like a lot of RP sites.

Have you thought about D/L one of those chat room bots that goes to random chat rooms on site like Yahoo! and advertises the site? I'm pretty sure there free, and they're not that much of a nuisence.

Buck, i think you should do whatever you need to (i.e. pop up adds and asking more pointedly for donations) to keep the site up and expanding, and to compensate you and the other moderators and administrators for your time and hard work.

I only saw the "donate to gamebanshee" link by accident while browsing around. It's obvious that you want to run a quality, classy site without the usual crass come-ons, and we all appreciate that, but like you said traffic is no problem, it's revenue. I know that people will live with pop ups, even if they might moan and whine about it. In the end, I think we all just want to see the site grow and prosper.

I beleive a lot of poeple are willing to live with the annoyances of pop-up adds if it means are favorite site remains toll free and online.

@Jaker: Buck is the only one who really nedds the moey in this case. The other moderators do this voluntarily, and do ask for any money or stuff in return.

Too bad i'm to young to donate money. If the pop up ads come only a few times in a day, i don't mind.

I think it's great that Buck, Equis, Fable, Mr. Sleep, T'Lainya, Gruntboy, etc. contribute their time to moderate forums, write walkthroughs and do all the other work to make the site good like posting the news and links.

Ideally, though, I would hope that people could be compensated for their time and work in ways other than the goodwill they generate and hopefully the connections they can make in the gaming industry.

Jeez... I made a bit of typos.. :D

We, and I speak as being a moderator, don't mind doing this. We all enjoy moderating on the forums, and other such things.

@Jaker: Thanks for correcting that little typo of do, to don't. :D

I think all of us site users are grateful that you and all the other moderators are willing to contribute your time, and hopefully the adulation, respect, and godlike power are some kind of compensation.

Still, I personally would wish that some kind of compensation (at the VERY LEAST lots of free merchandise and perks like that) would flow to people who make the site so enjoyable...I hate to even bring up the notion of monthly fees (voluntary donations are better), but I know that I sure have paid for services I use and enjoy less, and I pay for PC Gamer magazine and don't get nearly as much out of it...

My concern is mainly that if people like Buck, you, and everyone else put time into the site and don't get enough back, they will be tempted to move on...We don't want that to happen, do we?

I think I speak for everyone at GB when I say that knowing we help people and make that RPG just a little bit easier...is enough of a "payment" to keep us going and on the team =)

Thought I would throw my $0.02 in on this subject.

From my perspective, priority #1 is getting GameBanshee to atleast cover costs, hopefully a bit more so Buck can pay off his debts accured from it.

Although monetary gain from the site would be nice, there are some hidden perks we recieve. One you probably don't consider much is being able to show our work online. I can't speak for the other editors but GameBanshee provides me with the opportunity to work skills towards a job in the industry.

Your support in those efforts is appreciated more than you know. GameBanshee has an incredible fanbase!

I know that i would not have a problem with pop-ups every so often.

I was talking to my boss today about the issue of finance, we (my company) are one of the top BOL affiliates and we manage to accrue £80 a month from that. If anyone was hoping to stay aflaot on that alone their site would not last for very long. I take it this is why we are not using BOL because of the poor percentage.

How much of a financial aid are the pop ups going to be? I mean are you going to have to eventually look for a sponsor, someone of Interplays calibre?

If it will save the site....if. The only thing I worry about is it not helping.

I believe IMHO it's time to think about charging to come to the site. As you said this is a business and to loss money every month isn't in the best interest of the site.

I sit here and think...if 50 people would donate $2.00 a month...this would be $100.00 towards the site.....with 2000 to 3000 people here could there be 50 to 100 of these people who will step up???

The sad truth...I don't believe there will be enough to make a difference. :(

One word.

Subscription.

All sites will move to this sooner or later. The "free" content internet is dying. It will keep the rif raf out and lead to more productive posts. I would gladly pay $2.50 a month for my favorite BBS's on the net as long as they were professional. Hell just expirment a little...

Have one forum called "members only" or something charge $2.50 and see how it goes. All you will need is 250 members for your new software and this $600 will be dynamic comming in every month..

Of course there will be certain advantages to being a member. Like you can have a sig, can post mmore than 4X a day, XXX@gamebanshee.com email..

Hope this helps but something needs to be done before you die like many of my favorites had already done.

BTW-Donations are a terrible idea as I am sure you already know. Because of the nature of the "anonymous" internet and human nature.

I believe that the pop-ups are what must be done. I honestly have no problem with them, if they help the site. I also agree with what Weasel said, about mkaing this a full pay site. Buck would probably end up losing money (For instance, until I'm a legal adult, I wouldn't be able to come here, because my ad would never allow me to pay for site access while I live with him).

In the past few days, I've been clicking on the ads double time (Whether that's been helping or not...) and I have been giving all sorts of people the site address. I am willing to do almost anything to help with the maintenance of this site, I just can't gaurentee that my dad would allow me to donate/pay for access to this site. :(
