Minsc...the berserker

Post by Hazim ibn Gorion »

Okay, all those hardcore Minsc (and Boo!) fans out there will hate me for admitting this, but, with the exception of getting out of Irenicus' dungeon, I have yet to really use Minsc in BGII. So, I have a question: Who's got the skinny on his berserking ability? Does it work just like the berserker kit (except, I know, you can't control him like you can Korgan)? Are its benefits and weaknesses different in some way? Will he attack allies when berserking. Gimme the straight dope.

The Minsc fans will really hate me, I booted him. =O

I played him for quite awhile my first time through and eventually booted him for a real warrior. The second time through I tossed him out as soon as I could. He's humorous, but I went for POWER!

I found his beserker skill to be more harmful than good. I dunno, might just be me.

beserkers have this great protection against imprisoment but minsce did not seem to be imune to the imprisoments after beserking..

I would keep him your team just for his KICK ASS BATTLE CRIES (espescially befor the last fight against irenicus)

Actually two, maces are better because he doesn't have any proficiencies in long swords. And I think his battle cries are just a small bit short of stupid. Nalia's on the other hand, crossed that threshold a loooooooong time ago.

I played a straight kensai all the way to spellhold, then I deleted the whole damn set of savegames, because Minsc and his crappy abilities were pissing me off. Boo this, Boo that, get confused/go and attack Aerie or Jaheira. He's really by far the most overrated NPC in BG2.

nooooo, Minsc is great, he is funny and is a good warrior. he is more diverse than Korgan (personally i think korgan is overated) who is only good with an axe and has no dual-wielding prof slots.

give minsc a prof in long swords and dual wield em or give him a good two handed sword such as the silver blade and he is a force to be reckoned with. He is much better than a one weapon using evil midget that everyone always raves about.

Well thats just my opinion and the end of the day, each to their own.
There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

Minsc was originally a fighter berserker used by one of the programmers who made BG. They turned him to a ranger though but retained his berserker ability. Image

Hey ! Don't forget the funny things that happen when you mix Minsc with the talking 2 handed sword "Lillacor". Guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

As for Korgan, IMHO he's only good since he's dwarf that makes him immune to magic. That can be counter by giving Minsc some good item for protection. I'm not quite fond of Korgan myself since he's always bragging everytime.

For all of you who have dumped minsc, who do you use instead? You claim he's not a good warrior and the only reason to keep him is comic value, but who is better? Keldorn with his sword perhaps, but who else? Korgan has better constitution, but worse dexterity and strength. Admittedly, the strength is probably irrelevant with all the enhancements in the game, but what does that leave? Minsc has two slots in dual wielding and two in maces, meaning you can give him another one handed weapon and he can wield that and a mace quite nicely. Korgan has only axe when you find him, I believe (plus one in something else). Personally, I gave Minsc warhammer proficiency and gave him Crom faeyr, meaning he gets the strength bonus for both the hammer itself and the weapon he has in the other hand (in my case, the scullcrusher +3 mace). Korgan couldn't really do that, but I suppose it depends on whether you have someone else you want to give the hammer to. Minsc can also wield two handed swords and a long bow until you are ready for that combination. And although his priest spells aren't particularly significant, they rate about the same as Korgans beserker ability, in my opinion.
And, of course, Korgan's a baddy.
To whoever said minsc can't use longswords, I think the person who said it was probably assuming that you give him the ability.
If not Korgan, who else? I assume you want at least three warriors, that's what I got.

I posted my party-setup before ... when I compose one, I want at least one fighter, one thief, one mage and one cleric. The other two slots are open, and preferably to someone who can take some hits, and also deal them out. I opt for someone with a ranged weapon (long bow) there. The final slot preferably to someone to support either my mage or priest, but who has some fighting skills as well.

In BG II however, I use those slots mainly for NPC's with whom I do one or two quests triggered by them, before removing them from my party in favor of another NPC.

Well , I think having Minsc in your party or not depends on your character .If your main character is a fighter you simply don't need Minsc .My main character is a mage and i need a warrior (at least until i am powerful enough Image) . I gave him the flail of ages and long sword and boots of speed , he is the killing machine . Also he is great for role-playing aswell. I recall many moments of fun .. Jan trying to steal Boo , my girl friend asking me "Why don't you have an hamster?" I , getting jealous and summoning a familiar , shouting at home "Make way villany , hero coming through ! " with my mother looking at me with amazement.

Without Minsc , game has no fun .

To answer the original question about Minsc's beserking abilities....

On a couple of occasions I have had him just do one attack on a party member after the last enemy was killed. This can be BAD if he attacks Aerie or another lightly armored (weak) party member.
