Frustrated: Water jumping platform

OK, I have made it across three times now (without falling in the water) but, apparently I am too slow for this puzzle and, by the time I come to the other side the shadow gate has disappeared (timed out). Probably due to being 30+.
Even using a slow time crystal doesn't help. Anyone prepared to help an older guy like me? I have the game saved at the perfect jumping opportunity.

Ok if you're where I think you are in the Shadow Ruins remember these things.
1. As you walk in the door the "H" looking glyph resets the platforms and the shadow gate when you step on it. So there's no reason to leave the room you're in.
2. Go to the far right hand corner in a kiddie corner type of position and wait for the platform that rises right in front of you. Be somewhat close to the edge and jump on it.
3. Continue to run and jump to the second, then third, then fourth and finally to the other ledge. Remember you have to pivot your character 90 degrees in order to jump on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th platforms.
I don't know what settings you put your keyboard on in order to move but I found it extremely easier to use "W" and your space bar to manuveur your character in this room. It will take some practice so be patient but once you get the hang of it it's a breeze. I myself just got done with the Shadow Ruins and it gets alot harder so enjoy this easy stuff cause you'll be cursing later. NOTE: when you finally reach the other ledge from where you started don't fall in the water or you have to reset the timing by stepping on the "H" glyph and don't worry about the crates and barrels when you reach that ledge cause the gate will disappear if you're not fast enough. Good Luck.

Don't use the crystal, it slows mechanical movement, but does not slow the clock that is set/reset by stepping on the pressure plate. So, you move very slowy but the shadow door still closes after 20 seconds or whatever.
Weird note. If you are using time stop and exit a game, then the sound effects of the menu screen will be slowed until the spell finishes its effect. This doesn't apply to music. Like I just finished writing for another post, its another case of "What were they thinking"?

this was posted by tyme on the typhoon forums...
"..You should be faced with a long pit filled with water and four platforms that raise and lower seemingly at random. At your feet is a giant glyph tile that acts as a switch for the shadow gate on the far side of the room. You must hit this switch and then jump on the platforms to get to the other side on a 30 second timer. If you fall in the water the gate closes and you have to restart the whole thing.
NOTE: You can exit this room to the room with the knight, wait a few seconds and then re-enter the room with the platforms. Wait for the platforms to all go down and then as they come back up try to get across. This is your best chance for making it with the least amount of pain and suffering. You have plenty of time on the gate so wait for them to go down don't try to enter the room and start jumping immediately.The first time they come back up is in perfect order. "

Thanks guys (lasses ?). The thing is that getting across without falling in the water is NOT my problem.
Doing it in 30 seconds (or less) seems to be.
I made it across 4-5 times but the shadow gate disapears just as I jump off the fourth platform.

Ok Zed here's something nobody else has said. Use the Home* and End* keys on your keyboard to make the game camera move farther or closer to your character. I found this helped when I did the jump. It still took me acouple of tries but i did it. U dont have to keep loading your game because right infront of the shadow gate is a plate in the ground. You can reset the gate and the platforms every time u fall off by moving onto the plate. It takes a sec to reset it sometimes but dont worry it will. Then all you need to do is time your jumps use the w,a,s,d keys and you should get it. Don't worry i think that part of the game pissed everybody off Lol. Good luck!

I am just too old for this.
By now I am desperate enough to ask if anyone is willing to take my saved gane and do the jump for me?
Offers per pm are greatly appreciated

Another trick that doesn't work
I had another idea for solving the puzzle which unfortunately didn't work.
I thought that maybe if you drop a heavy object (like the
stone hammer) on the pressure plate, it would stay down.
No such luck
Anyway thanks to Razmanaz I am through this part of the puzzle now and found the chess puzzle easy at only about 3 mins

when u first enter the room, the platforms will go down to set thenselves. Then as the last platform goes down, jump for the first platform because it should be just coming up. If u miss, leave the room for a short time and reenter, this will reset the platforms.

Zed, I like your thinking!
Zed,
I emptied my entire junk including 5 of those massive stone hammers
along with swords and everything in my reqular equipment screen that
I did not need. I thought that would do the job. No such luck.
I then went through and immediately summoned three giants and two
were standing on the on that plate. I then stepped off and proceeded
to jump. I got to the third pillar and the shadow gate closed. I would
never have thought that two giants (trolls) were damn featherweights.
I timed how long the gate was open using two different timers and both
ended up reading 30 seconds but you don't get that long to make the
jumps as I had a friend time me.
I am stuck there now and I even tried Time Crystals but that did not help.
I have reloaded 15 times now and have just about had it with this stupid
puzzle.
If anybody can tell me the coordinates from one end to the other and where
to find them in the save game I sure would appreciate it.

Possible Solution ? I will give it a try.
I am going to attempt a hack around of this water jump puzzle and will
post my results here if it works.

from another thread:
I have a little advice that might help. On my keyboard the zero on the numbers pad is also jump. So I could use that instead of the spacebar. You must go forward the entire time, no time to move a little sideways for the next jump. Start with all four bars in the up postion then blindly jumping when the last bar starts downward. So your running full speed and using the zero key to jump with the left hand and changing the view with the mouse right? Okay here the helpful part. You need to run to the middle of top of the bar then turn 90 degrees and run towards the next jump and so on. Just remember middle of the bar, turn, run to the edge, jump, repeat.
If all else fails find a friend to hit the jump button for you. (yes, it crossed my mind)
My first couple (dozen) of tries I felt the same way, I'm done, this game is over, it's dead to me, how much could I get in trade for another game ............... Okay I'll try it one more time.

set on the glyph then immediately save your game
edit your saved game using the ediot above

when you reload the game you will be ion front of the portal which will still be active
I have no problem when the game is fair this was not...

Well, I am more than just 30+ and I eventually got my fingers to do it. I noticed the shadow gate closes as soon as you touch the water, regardless of time.
I watched the platforms and picked my own place in the sequence to start. Once I finally got through, I read the walkthrough. When I tried the sequence they recommended, I made it two of the first five times I tried.
Put your middle finger on w and use your thumb for the space bar. The trick is to start from the far right of the platform, and do it all in one continuous run, jumping even you can't see the platform you are going to ... it will rise.
One question for the people who responded ... I don't see how you can stay on the platforms 20 seconds without getting wet. Did you jump backwards or some such ?
And I agree that the last parts of the shadow ruins (I just finished) are harder.

Lin, mikesouth & thoon_thanks for your help_read below
I will address each of your responses separately and I thank you for
responding.
One thing first, I have not missed a jump forwards or doing the backflip to
not overshoot the landing zone in the game. You have no forward momentum
doing the backflip and in a number of cases that is the only way to do it as
your character automatically balances himself. The water jump room is not
the room to use the backflip in. You have 30 seconds to complete the whole
jump routine and this was timed by myself and a friend using separate timers
several times with the same results. I was on the last pillar making my jump
and the portal closed. The time elapsed on two successful jumps to the last
pillar was always just under 25 seconds and the portal was closing.
I used a different and slightly unique way to get past this part of Shadow
Ruins and I will explain it at the end.
thoon
I read the walkthrough on this area and it was basically the way you say
and the way I approached it. It is the only way that makes any sense since
you are jumping pillars at an angle.
Lin
I use a technique similiar to what you used only I use the up arrow key
for forward movement and the Delete key for jumping as it only takes one
had and I can use my mouse to quickly adjust my direction just as I touch
down on each pillar.
I'm not sure Lin how many people know that you can change the options and
set different keys to differnet functions. I have been doing that in every
game that allows it and it helps immensely because you can group your
controls in areas that are comfortable for you. I've got a post on the forum
on this with a .jpg of my keyboard setup.
The thread is "For those who use magic.. " and the link is:

if anyone wants to take a look.
mikesouth
Thanks for the coordinates as I will play around with them since I have a
backup copy of my save file for just before entering the idiotic torture room
that I found this to be. I tried the jumps about 25 times before i came up
with my own little solution. I too have visited rwgames.com site and have
found it useful. I think that is where I got what is I think the single best
map of the whole DL area which I sized down for printing.
I will post the method I usd as a separate post on this thread as I need
time to get it down right so members will be able to understand.

I too was having a hard time with this one. I had been moving with mouse and arrow keys through most of the game to this point. This puzzle actually made me switch how I was moving with my left hand on the keys. I switched to moving with the 'w' 's' 'a' and 'd' keys. As soon as I switched I made it across after getting used to the new keys. (took about 3 tries) This also put the 'q' 'e' and 'f' keys in a much easier position for me since I used all of those quite often. ( it was rather cumbersome to hit those keys when I was using the arrow keys for movement)

My Water Jumping Solution...after 25 attempts
Zed and other Members, I sympathize with you as I am 57.
How to beat the Water Puzzle and not get wet or even have to reload
and try again, again, again and again. I am calling it a "Spoiler" and it
works as I am finished with Shadow Ruins and am on my way to Talendor
to deposit my fourth relic so I can finish my Quest in Skuldoon and be
able to free Ellowyn in the Irynthabl Maze.
The way I solved the Water Jumping Puzzle is a little different. I looked
ahead in the walkthrough and discovered that there is no reason to waste
your time on either the water jumping puzzle or the Chess puzzle though
I would have enjoyed solving the Chess Puzzle on my own without using
the walkthrough.
Here is how I beat trying the Water Jumping Puzzle for a 26th time and I
came close about 8 times out of 25 but no cigar or sword.
I simply left the room where Kingston was being tormented and went back
to the Statue Room, saved my game in two slots and exited the game after
checking my Equipment Inventory for any weapon and wrote down the exact
name.
I then opened Hex Workshop after using the Item list posted on this site
to find the hex value for that weapon. I simply edited that hex value for
the item in my save game and replaced it with the hex value (D6000) for
Shadowslayer and saved the edited game over the original saved game.
I had made a backup before attempting this.
I restarted my game and in the Statue Room I equipped the Shadowslayer
and saved my game there in a new slot. I entered the main area and was
immediately attacked by the Shadow Wraiths. I procedded to kill the wraiths
and then talked to Lord Kingston and did what he said.
I'm now in the 'End Sequence' of the game. The Water Jumping Puzzle's real
solution is almost unreal as it involves blind jumping and with the help of some
friends I never had the full time to complete it. We timed it at 30 seconds
from when I stepped on the plate activating the timer and when the portal
started to close. We also timed it when I was jumping and the portal was
closing closer to 25 seconds after activating the plate and I needed an
additonal 2-3 seconds to make it.
The only important thing beyond the Statue Room is the acquisition of the
Shadowslayer. I think they should have dropped the Water Puzzle and
left the Chess Puzzle.
That is how I solved that stupid Water Jumping Puzzle so I did not have to
try a 26th and beyond time.

Hack the Water Puzzle Solution
Hi indie, thanks for the response.
The hack solution worked just fine as I mentioned in my previous post. I did
not go into alot of detail as I was writing up a more detailed version of how
to accomplish it for people who are not quite as familiar with hex editing.
The first thing you need is a program to do the hex editing with. I am using
Hex Workshop v4.2 ( actually v4.2.3.0 ) by Breakpoint Software and you
can download a trial version from
http://www.tucows.com which is a good
site or I think you can also get it from
http://www.bpsoft.com. I believe
both have a 30 day free trial after which the program won't work or will take you
to a web site where you can purchase it.
I am attaching a Word document with what is the more detailed version of
the hack solution. I have never written something like this before to instruct
others on how to do something so I hope I did a good enough job. I am going
to copy and paste this into Notebook as I just thought of something I could
have made clearer. I will be right back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I noticed a place in the explanation where I could have been clearer so I will
post the solution I used a little later today. I want to also include a couple
of partial screenshots showing what I mean.
Hey, it's always nice helping a grandma!
My Water Jumping Solution...here it is!
for those who want it,
I have finished my write up with examples (screenshots) of my solution to
the 'Water Jump Puzzle'. This is hopefully helpful to those who are not used
to dealing with hexadecimal numbers and I would suggest that users read
thru the explanation of how to do it while looking at the screenshot 'Samples'
that I provided.
The solution works as I am now in the "End Sequence" of the game. I just
hope that I did a good enough job of explaining how to do it so that if you
are stuck at this puzzle you will be able to get past it and finish the game.
Feel free to post comments on it either positive or negative as I have not
attempted something like this in over 25 years. You can call it a Cheat,
Spoiler or whatever you choose but I have decided to call it "Creative
Game Playing" in the face of idiotic programming.
The best way to use the attachments is to save them to a folder on your
hard drive and then print them out so they are right in front of you when
you implement this solution. The attachments are all free of viruses, malware,
spyware or any other trash as I upload them. There are four attachments
in all.
I almost forgot, you will need a hex editing program and if you check 'Post 19'
on this thread give links to two places you can download them. They are
Trialware and you have 30 days to try them out then you have to pay. I
considered Hex Workshop v4.2 ( actually v4.2.3.0 ) a valuable tool and so
I bought mine about a week after trying it. I think 'tucows.com' may have
a couple of hex editing programs.
I hope they help anybody who needs them. Good Luck!
Kel
