Custom Portrait Problems

I recently lost all of the data on my hard drive, and as a result have had to reinstall BG2.
At one time I knew how to use custom portraits, but now I'm having problems. The portraits I want to use are saved in 24 bit colour, the large ones are 110 by 170 and the small are 38 by 60. I have placed them into the folder marked "portraits" in my main BG2 folder, but they won't appear when I click on the "custom" tab once I bring up my game....

Any suggestions or feedback would be most appreciated :)

This happened to me once... I think you have to restart the game for them to show up.

Your pictures are O.K. (sizes and format)

I have restarted the game though...several times....

I even tried firing up a new game, just to test, still nothing...

Have you tried with more than one portraits?

Maybe the name have to be xxxxxL.bmp and xxxxxS.bmp... ?
What's your files names looking like? Mine are always 4-6 letters/numbers, with S, M or L at the end.

If you have msn, just add me (sp101101@hotmail.com). I'll check if your portraits are working with my game.

Try putting them in your override folder as well.

Your sizes and color settings are fine. Have you saved them as BMP? Also, you need to use short names for the files (maximum 8 letters IIRC). There is however no need to name them _M or _S at the end.

You could try the Portrait Manager, it has helped me several times. I'm unsure where I got it to begin with, so try the other solutions first...

I think Astafas' point about the filename length is the problem.

Cheers everyone! It was indeed the length of the file names.
Duh... it are always the small things that trip me up... :o

If the file names were too long, how did you get them working in the first place? :D

Is there also a way I can change the Images of the other characters besides the leader and where can I find this Portrait Manager?

I did try naming some characters in my portrait folder with the characters from my game but that didn't work....Or is there a Tutorial some where on how to do all of this?

Thanks for any help on this matter :)

Do a google for info on portrait importing for BG. As for changing the NPCs' portraits, that would require some more heavy handed editing outside of the actually game. I think it's possible with Shadowkeeper

Actually, it's easy, and you don't need an editor. Just take the portraits you want to use and give them the appropriate names (NIMOENL.BMP and NIMOENS.BMP, for example) and put them in your OVERRIDE directory.

Von's way should work. However, in my experience, you also need to put the new portraits in your 'portrait' folder.

If you do a search for the different portraits around, you will find that there are more portraits than you could've imagined. IMO, there are a couple good sites around, such as PXG's portraits and Divine Treasures. Nowadays, I use almost none of the original BG portraits. I've switched them all for ones that are more to my taste.

You can simply download these portraits, save them, and (like Von mentioned) change their names to to the respective character. If you don't know a characters exact name, for example, valygar's name is too long for the portrait name, you can easily look it up with SK. ;)

You probably found it at Karwal's site: The Portrait Portal.
