Enchanting items

I realize that you use soul gems with captured souls to enchant items. But does it matter which trapped soul you use when enchanting the item. I basically don't want to waste a trapped Golden Saint on a mediocre item.

Yes, it does. Each creature has a specific enchantment limit, with Golden Saints and...Ascended Sleepers I believe? being able to give you the ability to do constant effect enchantments. When you attempt to make an item with a soul, you should be able to see both the item's ability to hold an enchantment, and the soul's ability to provide one on the menu. A rat may only give you 1 or 2 or something I believe, while a Frost Atronoch gives you something like 40. I can't remember too well the exact numbers.
Just trap souls and check them. I save the weaker ones for recharging items when I need to, and the really good ones I make items with.

Yes, those provide the greatest amount of power, and the only power sufficient to create CE effects.

If I'm doing more power playing, once I gain the ability to summon golden saints at will, their souls will be all I use for good items, even if they are not constant effect, since they (and ascended sleepers) have the greatest charge.

I've always wondered that myself. I consider it a flaw in the way the creaters of the game decided how to make things work. The better enchantments you HAVE to go to an enchanter person and pay them to do it in my experiences with the game. Amazing, considering most of the time I know I'm better at near everything it is they can do when I'm ready to do those wonderful enchantments.
I could be wrong though, there might be a way to do a good enchantment on your own though. I know CE items have been utterly hopeless for me to create on my own.

If I decide to focus on enchantment as my skills and such, for that reason alone I drop gold on my character as a "gimme". If you've pumped your skills each level, and are unable to use them, I compensate for that. It's truly, thoroughly irritating.

Since enchanting items, especially good enchantments is so potentially unbalancing, I think this is at least one way the developers tried to make the game at least somewhat difficult.
Though, if they were trying to achieve balance they should have also made it far more difficult to become wealthy... amongst other things.
Because enchanting can be so incredibly unbalancing, quite often, I won't enchant items for anything except making travel more straightforward. i.e water walking, levitating etc.

*laughs* I do my best to be able to tackle anything in the game while below level 20 so my skills and such aren't ridiculous. So enchanting item's really helps with that. Still I find it ludicrous that a character who's maxed out enchantment and has their intelligence through the roof can't compete with the little lady in the mage's guild.
If they were worried about game balance, they could have adjusted things so you couldn't get that powerful and let people still create anything they want at that level of skill, you know? Not put things as a virtually unlimited amount of power available, you just have to cough up the money for someone else to do it for you.

Don't forget the Azura Star, it is a reusable grand soulgem.
You can then sell the conventional grands for lot's of gold and go to an enchanter if your enchanting skill isn't sufficient.
