Tech help needed! BG crashes on save on my Mac

Post by Red_Reera »

Hello --

I am trying to play BG on a system running OS X with the "Classic" environment. The game plays fine until I try to save, at which point it crashes completely and throws up an error saying "...could not read the file AR2600.are (or AR2700.are) from the hard disk." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling (first full install and then minimum install), I've tried copying in the area files from a different game disk, I've tried running it with the Graphsim patches, but the same thing keeps happening. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks from a perplexed wanna-be paladin.

I think you have to actually boot up in classic and play it that way. At least that's what I had to do. You may have reinstall it in classic as well.

If that fails, and you own BGII:SoA (ToB not required but people should get it anyway :P ), you can install the BG1Tutu mod that hooks Baldur's Gate I into the Baldur's Gate II game engine--which is newer and much more stable in OS X, AFAIK. There are both PC and Mac versions of the mod; I am using the PC version and do not have a Mac.
