After giving the Staff to the witch if you talk to her again, she will offer you the choice of either Sorceror or Battlemage. Alternatively, if you do the quest for the House of Dragon, the House of Tiger in Arindale will offer you the eastern Options (Shugenja)

When you talk to the witch one of the Options at the top is give Staff to Wianne. When you click that, she makes you a mage.
This is always the first step to becoming a mage!
After that you can choose your progression.
I am currently going for:
Adept/Mage/Enchantress/(Sorceror/Wizard)
and, the learning bonuses to Spells make it very nice. I am playing a female elf this time round.

regret
i understand it
but if i already took the tiger quest in arindale
after i became mage
can i regret and talk to the witch for giving
me the other quests
or i'm stuck
with the tiger of the house quest?
and can no longer become a battalemage and the other?

The tiger quest is part of the main quest and has nothing to do with being a mage. If you don't have a grey mage icon in your second tier, then you can still become a sorceror or battlemage. Check your charactersheet.

Looking back at one of feldman's earlier posts, it looks like he accepted the shugenja quest. That means he's stuck with that class, and he can't become a sorcerer or a battlemage.
