A nice simple thread which anyone with a taste in music can post in (which means everyone, my tastes vary very much )

I head on holiday this Saturday, thank god. Now, I discovered I have a £10 gift voucher leftover from Christmas o) for a music store and it seems appropriate to gather some tunes for my expedition to paradise . I am in need of a fresh new direction in music. Your challenge, SYMers, is to name me an album to occupy my ears.

It can be any genre and any era - any theme . While I will be basking in the sun, if you feel the need to recommend Frank Sinatra's Let It Snow go ahead
One side note, obscure or hard to aquire items are generally a no-no - I don't want to hunt across the country again for something as rare as Dag Wiren's Serenade For Strings, as exquisite a piece of music it may be. This is a strictly walk in - buy - leave job (more time for a "final" pint(s) in the pub)

Truly ANY genre you wish (except maybe European Death Metal - those folks are a wee bit too hardcore for me )

Be nice maybe if you posted your favourite album, or an album which has a particular influence on your life - give the topic some flava!

Undertow-TOOL, I loke TOOL a whole lot.
Mer De Noms-A Perfect Circle, another band Manyard owns, the lead singer for TOOL. I would recomend those.

I'd recommend what DZ said...but...do you own Felon's and Revolutionaries, Life AND Group Therapy by Dope? If you don't own all three....get them!

I own Life But I seek NEW direction! My music collection feels strangely stale it just needs an injection of some new material.

Guess what, I'm going to recommend ManowaR.
If you want some of the more "classic rock" you could go with their first album "Battle Hymns". Or if you want something from the late 80s go with the "Fighting the World" album. And last, if you want to work out and listen to music (this is a really good combination) at the same time get the "Louder Than Hell" (Much more heavy than the two previous mentioned).

I wonder if the people that work in the record store you are going to would let you listen to the cd before you buy it. That way you find out if you like it before you buy anything.

If you want something a bit claming, I would recomend Sublime, the self Titled Album. I love that band. I stil can't get over Bradley ODing and Dying. Great Band man...

I would reccomend any album by Blackilicious or DJ Nu Mark or Jurassic 5 or Nas or Dr. Dre and any album produced by them if you like rap that is.

*sputters* Blasphemy! Group Therapy was GREAT when they did their free show around here. The girls went nuts too for the second track on that album. Kind of like Move It, but worse.

It has more of a mix with soft and harder stuff than the first one, kind of like Life. I think they added in a new guitarist, or was it switched a guitarist or bassist? I was really, really buzzed when I saw the show...

OH! If you want to go in a different direction, and try some underground rap, look for Atmosphere. If you can find it that is... one of the few groups I like.

Ummm, as for Rap, I would say.... Snoop Dogg. I like his stuff beacuse you can at least understand it. But its only recomended for those who like old skool Rap yo, forizzle.

@ Darth Snoop's tha shizzle! as you might have noticed earlier, I posted "anything produced by Dr. Dre" Snoop falls into that category, hun, and I do love Snoop as a rapper as well as an actor. (I saw him in Starsky & Hutch and Soul Plane)

Forgot that he Dre prdoced him. I liked soul plane it was different, but Good. Wasn't Snoop in Bones?

Judging from the many previous threads about music, heavy metal is by far the most popular music genre among SYM members. Personally, it is one of the few genres I don't like, so I will recommend some completely different musical styles.

Popular music

Joko,from village to Town - Youssou N'Dour, the most well known African popular music singer and also in my opinion, the best male voice in all of popular music.

Medulla - Björk's totally vocal album including human rythm boxes and Greenlandic choirs

Find a collection with Malcolm Mclaren's 12' inches of early scratching like Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Buffalo Gals, Hey DJ, Paris is jazz. If you can't find a collection, look for the remix album "Buffalo Gals back to skool" or "Fans"


Classical music

Shostakovitch 10th symphony - the greatest piece of music ever composed, in my opinion. Best is to get a version recorded by the old USSR minstry of Culture Symphony Orchestra directed by Gennady Rozdyezvensky, failing that try to get the Russian Symphony orchestra version from the 1990's. Failing also that, get one with Bernard Haitink and London Philharmonics. If you are to buy only 1 more CD in your entire life, go for this one.

Rachmaninov - Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini

Ligeti - Lux Aeterna, Atmospheres, Continuum...or if you look for an album, try Mechanical Music.

If you like beautiful piano music, try for instance Chopin's nocturnes or Liszt 1st piano concerto.

If you like choir music, try Palestrina or Vivaldi's Gloria in D.


Jazz

The Rh Factor - Roy Hargrove, one of the best contemporary jazz musicians who is influenced by hiphop

Amandla or Tutu - late crispy works by Miles Davis. Or buy some album together with John Coltrane if you like more traditional jazz

The Köln Concert or Staircase - Keith Jarret, excellent modern jazz pianis


Experimental/Electronic

I can't talk about music without mentioning my darlings The Residents. Their best album in my opinion is "Not available", failing that, try "Eskimoo" or "Commercial album" (the latter is easier to learn to listen to)

Stockhausen - Kontake. The mother of contemporary experimental music. You can also try Stimmung.


Various

The girl from Ipanema - or any title that covers the classical bossanova by Jobim & Gilberto.

Some "best of" tango nuevo composer Astor Piazzolla that includes his most famous works like Adios Nonino, Ausencias, Libertango, Balada para un loco, Meditango, Michelangelo, Tango Fugata.


That's all I can think of right now, this is stuff that no human being in the industrial world should live without having heard at least once!

Foghat! Go for foghat.

Can't go wrong with Foghat (they're playing in Toronto this weekend!)

My recommendation, if you liked Zepplin, and Robert Plant, he just released a new album: Mighty Rearranger. It's a good buy, in my opinion.

Right now I really like System of a Down's Mesmerize. Evanescence's Fallen is also an album I enjoyed. Both are rock, with System of a Down leaning towards the metal side, but not quite being fully metal. As for Evanescence, there's something about a soaring voice over top of loud guitars that makes it beautiful. But maybe that's just me.

If you like classical music of any period over the last 900 years, check out The Berkshire Record Outlet. It sells overstock and deleted items from a wide variety of first rate labels, all new. If you wait about a year or two on many labels, they're stuff arrives here. And all of it is about one-third to one-quarter retail cost. I've even found some fine things for less than that.

Okay... some of my personal, all-time favorites:

Rage Against the Machine: Rage Against the Machine- nothing will get you more excited. This was a revolutionary (pun intended) album when it came out. I can't recommend it enough.

Jarabe de Palo: Depende, La Flaca orBonito- Spanish language. My personal favorite Spanish band. Just great music. Again, I can't recommend it enough.

Pink Floyd: Animals or Wish You Were Here- These are whole albums, and each one is like no other. You listen to them over and over and over, and they both just get better.

The Beastie Boys: Sounds of Science- a greatest hits album, two discs, with fun, accessable, hip-hip.

Modest Mouse: Good News for People Who Like Bad News- This is a recent release, and at first I didn't like it. However, that was because it was horribly overplayed in my hometown. After I listened to it and gave it a chance, I really like it. It will definately spice up your collection.

The Offspring: Smash- Punk,California style. If you like punk at all, this is a safe bet.

Radiohead: OK Computer- I'm not a huge Radiohead fan, but this is supposedly the best album of the 1990s. I'm not sure about that, but I do think it is brilliant.

Paul Simon: One Trick Pony- Chill album, realtively sad, excellent quality. Paul Simon's best album, on par with Graceland. If you like guitars and simple rock and roll, this is a sure thing. Again, it is a slower album.

U2: the Joshua Tree- Arguably the best album ever made. Read that again, and think about buying it.

Little Feat: Dixie Chicken- Twangy, but in my top 10 albums.

Metallica: Metallica or Battery- They were the biggest band in the world for 15 years for a reason. They're babies now, but those albums still rock.

Okay, I could keep going. As far as I'm concerned, these are all no brainers. Look into all of them and see which one suits you best. I love RATM- that's my #1 selection. If you don't have any Rage, spend the money and give them a chance.
