Not sure exactly where it fits into the FR Universe, but in general, Demogorgon is a "Demon Prince" and the equivalent of a diety on his own set of planes in the Abyss. In essence, you are defeating an avatar, although maybe a bit less powerful than say Cyric's avatar. Demogorgon is only one of several named princes including Orcus (Lord of the Dead), Jubilex (Faceless Lord or Lord of Slimes), Grazz'zt (think Driz'zt as a demon and evil ;) ), and several others that I can't remember off the top of my head. All in all, they're group of very tough customers. Feeling helpful today for some reason...

Every single Abyssal ruler is listed here, just in chase you're interested, and to prove that I'm so very much smarter than you.

Well, I would have thought the 'Prince of Demons' would be a little more imposing...I mean, the demogorgon looks like a baboon with tentacles for Christ's sake! Anyways, the Demogorgon is the Prince of Demons but there isn't much of a background for him. If there is, I never saw it being mentioned in the game.

Demogorgon was originally meant to be tougher, but Interplay changed him to make a better balance in the game. There is a file you can install to get the original version, Baldurdash has it here

I haven't tried it myself yet, I plan to try it out as soon as I've finished ToB. For my level 20-22 party, Demogorgon was no match at all with core setting. Or maybe I was just lucky?

And from left field...

I've always thought even the name 'Demogorgon' was worth a bit of a chuckle - I mean...

(Game Designer) "Well, the real gorgon won't be finished for a few months yet, but I've put together this demogorgon for you so you can see how he might look..."

Yeah, I know Black Isle (et al) didn't come up with the name and I'm just being pedantic, but I still think the prince of demons would demand a tougher name than that! ;)

I assume 'demo' means something sinister in latin or greek or something. Anybody know?

demi means...... partly, or half. Demi-god = part of a god. Demihuman means human-type. Demi-lich is an exception, because IIRC it refers to the lich ascending to something but still a tier below it's max potential. Demo may mean something else or it may not.

Anyways, I found this watered down Demogorgon decidedly a dissappointment. I hit the cap (8,000,000) and just stomped him before I could blink. My party is tank-heavy, so I sent Tiburon (that would be me), Jaheira, Anomen, Sarevok and Keldorn at him. But not before Anomen dropped a Storm of Vengeance, Imoen dropped a dragon's breath Jaheira threw out a Earth Elemental Prince (zak... something). Then when my security guard meatheads surrounded him (my main charachter a fighter mage maxed out with dual-fireshields, stoneskin, MI, blur, true sight, tensors x-form, and chanted, barkskinned and blessed by Anomen and Jaheira). THEN we got down to business of hack and slash. In the chaos of the battle I forgot where Demogorgon died, but all of a sudden he dissappeared. I have this suspicion that when the Elemental Prince threw an earthquake out, he got sucked in or something, because all I remember fighting was a bunch of mariliths and seeing Demogorgon whine about dying.

Showing my nostalgia: This is from the ur-tome of role-playing creatures, Gary Gygax's AD&D Moster Manual I, (c) 1977 TSR Games: p.16-17

"Rivalry between demon lords is great, but the enmity between Demogornon and Orcus is immense and unending. Demogorgon is a terrible opponent. First, he possesses great powers in his two heads. Should he fix the gaze of both upon his enemies he is able to hypnotize. This hypnosis will affect from 10-100 creatures if 1 to 3 hit dice, from 5-40 with 4 to 6 hit dice, from 3 to 24 with 7 to 9 hit dice, 1 to 12 with 10 to 12 hit dice, and from 1-4 with 13 or more hit dice. Those over 15 hit dice save versus magic, all others are automatically hypnotized. This hypnosis of mass sort is limited in that victims are only under its influence to 1 turn, but during this time will follow most instructions absolutely (self-destruction would not be heeded) and for from 1 to 6 turns afterwards will tend to believe or carry out the residual of the hypnosis. Demogorgon's left head has a gaze attack which has the effect of a rod of beguiling, and the gaze of his right head causes insanity from 1 to 6 turns. When used independently in this manner, the potential victim or victims save versus magic to determine whether or not they avoid the eyes.

Second, Demogorgon is able to lash his forked tail striking with it as a whip-like weapon. Its touch causes energy drain from one to four levels, the tail striking as a flail for hit determination.

Third, his tentacles are deadly weapons, each causing 1-6 hit points of damage to any opponent, but those opponents which are of smaller stature (particularly those hailing from the material plane such as humans, dwarves, elves, etc.) will be subject to rot-a limb becomes useless in 6 melee rounds and drops off in another six; the body sustains damage which permanently removes 25% of the person's hit points in 6 melee rounds, cumulative per hit. A cure disease made within the 6 melee round limit will save the member so that it will heal in 1 to 4 weeks. And body hits will be restored entirely with the cure if made within the 6 melee rounds after the hit.

…getting tired of typing… skip to end…

Description: It is contended by some that this demon prince is supreme and in any event he is awesome in his power. This gigantic demon is 18' tall and reptilian. Demogorgon has two heads which bear the visages of evil baboons or perhaps mandrills with the hideous coloration of the latter named beasts. His blue-green skin is plated with snake-like scales, his body and legs are those of a giant lizard, his twin necks resemble snakes, and his thick tail is forked. Rather than having arms, he has great tentacles. His appearance testifies to his command of cold-blooded things such as serpents, reptiles and octopi.

BTW. thanks for not saying "Demogorgon" in the title of your posting. Some people who are new to the PnP may not have the same visceral assossiations with Demogorgon, but for my PnP friends, he was the ultimate in badness (the toughest monster in MM1). We'd get stoned and muse about schemes by which we might take him down, but we never dared try. In my mind ToB cheapened him a bit by making him just another dude to kill.
