New Install Crashes at Start of New Game

Heya Folks!

I just installed Icewind Dale II. Whether I choose a default party or make my own, when I click done the "Starting Game..." screen runs, and the game locks up entirely once the progress bar reaches the end and it *seems* like it wants to launch. I can't even get into the first scene.

I have a great gaming system, so it's not an issue of my hardware. I have run Patch 2.01. Is there anything I'm missing?

Has anyone had this problem? I tried searching the forum, but didn't get any hits.

Thanks for any help.

I've got exactly the same problem here. the weird thing is , the game worked about 4 weeks ago. I tried to reinstall and put on the patches had a little fiddle with the graphics settings but it just crashes everytime i start a game. I can create parties etc but as soon as the game screen needs to load it freezes..

Please help us!! :(

*bump*

Exactly, mine was a similar problem. It worked fine when I got it, but now it is being a pain. I still haven't found a way to fix it. I'm hoping someone out there has seen this before or has some idea about what I can do to fix. Thanks for *any* help all!

What's your OS? If it's Windows, do you have a new(ish) version of DirectX?

I have the same problems.

Am running Athlon 1.5G XP-SP2 with 512M RAM, GeForce 4 MMX (64Meg), DirectX 9c.

I found that clicking the three 'Software' options in the Graphics options allowed me to run the game (sort of). I ticked them all, choose a default party and the game started great. So I quit and made a party, only to have it freeze again.

Not sure if it is just IDW2 though, as Arx Fatalis also refuses to run and The Bards Tale runs slowly. I haven't done anything to my system of late, so I'm not sure where the problems are coming from.....??

Hmm... It might have something to do with XP Service Pack 2. I heard some people have problems with that. Barring that try upgrading your graphics drivers, I hear that version 56.72 is the magic number in regard to IWDII.

I unistalled the latest nVidia driver, then installed the 56.72 version (from a couple of years ago, available at the nVidia site). Everything seems to be working, even some other games that crashed on startup.

Thanks Ravager !

I'm glad it works for you. :D
It didn't make that much difference for me, but then my problems are trying to get other games working :( .
