Hi all - confused lass here!
When putting points on weapon proficiencies, it says you gain an extra half attack per round each time you add a point (apart from the first point). Is this cumulative ie a grandmaster will have 2 extra attacks per round? Or does it mean you simply gain an extra half attack and that this is the total: on extra half attack, alongside the extra damage and speed factor bonuses? (Hope this makes sense - I have 'prepared' for a three day BG sesh!

Unless you get the grandmaster patch fix, I'm pretty sure you just gain 1/2 attack total.

I think Thrifalas has it right. Bioware nerfed proficiency in BG2.

1/2 extra attack max gain (your second guess). There is no point in more than 2 asterisks in any proficiency.

Why, Grandpa?

Cause just the step from nothing to * and from * to ** both are greater (by themselves) then from ** to *****. You gain +2 to hit and +2 to damage from nothing to *, you gain +1 to hit, +2 to damage and an extra attack per round when going from * to **, but you just gain like 1 speed factor, one damage and one to hit when going all the way from ** to *****. (not precisely, but something like this)

So, in case you're not 100% sure what weapon you're gonna use, don't gain grandmaster since all stars above two is pretty useless. Still, a Paladin will want ***** in 2h sword. Just depends on how sure you are of your weapon choice.

Paladins are restricted weapon specialisation (**)..

As SP101 said, Paladins are restricted to 2 stars (except the Lord kit from TDD).

No real point in going beyond 2, unless you have the Grand Mastery patch installed.

Plus I believe Swashbucklers don't get the extra 1/2 attack from weapon specialization.

D'oh! I was thinking Sare with 5 profs, then I was thinking Carso, then I was thinking Pala... though I just said they'd WANT 5 stars. Which they want, but cannot have.
