Items "acquired" or "discarded"

Does anyone know why some duplicate items are picked up, while others are not? I'm doing all these quests, and I noticed that while I can get a ton of some items, others are "discarded" after the first one is in inventory...?

There is probably a limit to how many items you can carry.
And I think, and hope, the most valuable items goes in to your sack while lesser valuable items are discarded.
I have noticed when selling of my "junk", there is a whole lot of the most valuable items while there is only one or two of the crap items.

Some things like potions and nethel katals you can get a large number of. The quantity just increases. For equipment, you can only have one of eacy item. You have a junk slot/category, but it only holds 18 pieces of equipment, and yes it keeps the most expensive - which is great because I sell this junk to by spells.
