Man... Life as a Wizard Slayer....

Hi all,
What have i gotten my self into... Just for the record. I havnt read anything of any sites before I launch my fist game. (Sorry, had the game of ages (a gift), but never got around to try it out). But she-it, had I known just what I was getting my self into with this wizard slayer... I would have chosen something else. If I didnt have some meny heals in my group, I would have been slayed ages ago. Human/Wizard Slayer, that has got to be the hardest class in the game.
Anyways, I am level 11 now and I havnt sailed anywhere. But I was hoping to hear from someone in the same position as me, what weapons to get etc, anything that could help me out a little. Right now, I need to be surrounded by Clerics 24/7 or I get whooped.

Well Kim, I've never played the wizard slayer either, but taking a look at it, I would suggest the following:
Hit wizards fast! Since you have a 10% cumulative chance per hit to screw up their casting, use a fast hit weapon like the Tuigan short bow(you get it from the beastmaster in the copper coronet, and you did put points in dex, right?). It has 3 attacks per round, plus you hit them from a distance(you rarely get the chance to just walk up to a wizard anyways).
You are limited with magical items...Armor and weapons only(what about a shield?). If you take the bow strategy above, you need good fighters in your party(minsc and keldorn, for example) to block the melee fighters.
What is posing you all the problems? Wizards or fighters or monsters? If it's monsters, you should get the best AC possible. If it's wizards, you should use the bow and have your mages disrupt their casting(magic missile) or the clerics(insect plague from jaheira works well). If it's fighters, use minsc and keldorn and make yourself a melee fighter too.
Other weapons and armor to look out for include the elven court bow(nalia's keep, but you have a heck of a fight for it), doomplate +3(asylum dungeon), Lilacor(slavers compound), daystar(city gates lich), etc.

Also i have heard that Wizard slayer will change a lot to ToB, to the better. You get higher magic resistance, can use potions and more..

Kaaze, just curious, who do you have in your party? You said you have a bunch of Clerics. I think I may have a solution to your problem. You are running around with a bunch of clerics and a wizard slayer!! Seriously, there is no pc so bad that the right combination of npc's won't fix. I recommend Korgan (IMO best fighter) Edwin (best mage). They are my two favorite NPCs and either one of them can take care of most battle on there own. Other people like Keldorn, Jan, and Jaheira are considered good by some (although i don't use them) Anyway, good luck too you

I'd definitely recommend another class for your first go-through. Just about any, actually. You'll probably get through the game quicker and with more fun if you restart.

Well, my group is as following:

Minsc
Jan
Nalia (not all the time)
Jaheira
Viconia (Romance)

Jeheira is my main heal caster + harpers call. Viconia, dont think I can live without her spells. Jan, is mosly just the "required" theif although he has som great spells.

But most of my problems are with resistance. My magicresistance is very poor, like 18%. I have not found any armor or weapon to bost this and since I cant wear any rings, amulets and cloaks.. I have no idea where I am going to get it. I know about the miscast ability, but it works like ****. I always try and engage the wizard, but its maybe 1 spell that doesnt work, not much. But I do think that I have made a mistake in using melee weapons as my primary. I havnt really put any points in bows etc. This could be the case.
A rather good example of what I mean is: I have just finished the first Bohdi task. (Sorry, hates theives and Bohdi is just too damn wicked, cant stay away :-) )Now, one shadow theif hits me with a dagger, then hit afew other members of the party. The big problem with this is, I cant take care of my self. I need someone to either cast a spell on me or bye very exspencive restoration scolls. I cant use ANY potions, wich is really killing me. Top that with, say 3 other party members that have been poisoned.. and you see my problem. Even after I kill them a get the potion from their body, im still doomed.
But, its my first game. I am still learning how to effectively use the different spells and items. Maybe it will get better. But it really sucks not being able to use the necklace give my Bodhi, that renders you immune to poison.

I have never used Wizard Slayer (though I liked the title!) but from what I have read, and experienced in the game, they appear to be one of the hardest classes, especially for the first time through. Sooo many items/potions you can pick up in the game say not usuable by Wizard Slayer. ie you won't be able to use any magical items other than armour or weapons.

It is possible to pick any other class and customize their script to concentrate their attack on enemy spellcasters. The purpose of attacking a wizard is to stop them spellcasting. Wizards are hopeless in melee so one tactic would be to get your heavies onto him to disrupt his spellcasting, alternatively the priest spells Summon Insects and Insect Plague cause spell failure of 50% and 100% respectively for 7/6 rounds.

It is only my personal opinion but there are easier and more effective classes to start a game but you will easily find lots of people on this board who have played a Wizard Slayer and can better advise. Please don't give up on the game - you will eventually find a class you are happy with (and it could be Wizard Slayer!) and then maybe play through again with another class - as a LOT of people on this board will tell you!

Happy Gaming! :)

ahh, not exactly my kind of party you have there. Give my suggestions a try. Although it is too late to pick up Edwin (because the theives have already gone hostile and you can't do the thieves guild side quest) go by the coppoer coronet and add good 'ol Korgan to your party. I think you will find that with some decent items, he will quickly become a huge asset. It's too bad that you can't get Edwin though.

Well, I guess you are right. The Wizard Slayer just too damn hard for the first game. Altough I think its going OK, its just a pain in the butt not to able to uses 90% of things you find. Guess my Wizard Slayer character will have to wait for ToB. I just really anoying cause I like to have a concept behind my character and have written a good bio etc. And I just love the title Wizard Slayer and feel its on of the classes with most "meat".
I was thinking about a undead hunter, but the lawful good just really puts me off. I dont really have any desire to play a wizard of any kind.. just not me :) , if I do deside to go with a undead hunter, what are my chances with Viconia? :D she is just too damn wicked, ohh and I hope I can get Bohdi as a NPC in the future (just kidding).

Kaa

Your English is millions better than my Danish - don't apologise!

Why don't you check out a download available from this site called "Riverwinds Guide To Character Classes"

Again it is another persons opinion but it his opinion on all classes and is well worth the read, I found it very informative though ultimately the choice is yours - it has to be. I could email to you if you wish.

Wizard Slayer or no, when dealing with enemy Mages, keep the following pointers in mind:
  • Mages cast annoying combat protections (Stoneskin, Protection from Magical Weapons, Mantle, etc). Have one of your Mages memorize loads of the level 5 spell Breach.
  • Mages cast annoying spell protections (Spell Turning/Deflection/Trap). Don't waste too much time on removing them. Instead, cast area spells at them (Fireball, Holy Smite, Power Word Blind, etc); those cannot be absorbed or deflected. Or cast Breach (also not affected) and beat the crap out of them.
Hope this helps.

I gave up playing wizard slayer/cleric (7/13) 'cause it was damn hard... The worst thing was that he couldn't use any healing potion (he couldn't tank) and the charge for rod of resurrection was rather limited and was also quite expensive to recharge. It might be a good idea for wizard slayer to use bow but I think that archer kit would be a way better for that kind of job. IMO wizard slayer is one of the hardest kit (another would be beastmaster).

Yeah, the beastmaster, I was just reading about that one.. and thought.. hmm, that has to be just as hard. ;)

Well, to sum it up. I have started over.. but I have saved my game and hope to continue it when ToB get here(Im hoping that save games are compateble).
My new class.. Barbarian, not my usual pick, in fact I running away comes to mind when I hear that word. But, I thought, hey! he is a nice guy, can wear almost anything (MAGICAL STUFF FOR ONCE!!!) and he got that self destruct button.... :p

Yshania - I have already read it.. that is why I came here asking for help with the Wizard Slayer. After seing the grades, it confirmed my deppest fears that I was having, about my character.

Thanks to all of you, you have been most helpfull.

PS. what a great game.. and I was thinking that it would be other diablo spawn... truely blessed!.

For some fun try the Monk. For some power try the sorceror (the most powerful class, IMHO).

If your restarting and want someone to kill wizards, id suggest a monk , they end up incredibly powerful with up to 83% magic resistance which negates wizards pretty much, i just walk up and bash em till their stoneskin is gone then there dead. You can also stun, quiver palm, hide in shadows right up next to the wizard, and many more cool things. Look closely at the monk , they flat out rock :)

I also went through the game the first time with a Wizard Slayer...I thought it was pretty tough....I had Minsc, Jaheira, Jan, Imoen, and Nalia. You can use magical armor and weapons so you can still get very low AC and great weapons. I just remember having to rest a lot. And it seemed that at the higher levels I didn't have to get healed as much.I saw no advantage against mages...I guess I used a more magical offence most of the game. Kinda ironic that a Wizard Slayer traveled with 4 magic users. I think I had the red dragon armor, Fortress shield, Helm or charm resistance, one strenght enhancing girdle.... One thing I noticed is through all my other games after that I never relied on potions that much...

"One thing I noticed is through all my other games after that I never relied on potions that much..."

Yep, know where your comming from. In my new game. When even my character is gettin low on HP, I almost instantly turn to clerics. Meny times I have shouted " Im DOOOMMEDD " and remembering that great new blue bottle type icon in my quick slot and going... "Ahhhhhhh"
