Which part of this site uses Java, why, and can I view the site properly without it?

If by Java you mean JavaScript then it doesn't look to be all that much from the "viewsource" of the forum - however, I wouldn't be able to say how much functionality is actually placed in the scripts. Only Buck (or his webmaster/or the forum makers if it is purly standard) can say that.

JavaScript is completely unconnected with Java and shouldn't be much of a problem with most browsers.
The people who invented JavaScript were just tagging onto the 'fad' of the time- Java.

I'm not talking about Javascript. Whenever I go onto this forum, no matter which browser I'm on, it activates Java Runtime.

Wierd - doesn't do so for me?
If anything Java is running - I'd be pretty sure it would "only" be advertisments or popups of some sort, but I've not experienced needing JRE when visiting GB.

I usually experience a lag of about half a second, then I'll sometimes see the teacup icon in the tray. Forgot whether it always happens - this is on Firefox. Not much of a problem when I'm on my home comp, but yesterday I was surfing on a P3 comp with a lot less RAM than mine, and when I got onto GB the delay was noticable. Also, yesterday, I was surfing on IE, and I got a popup from Java.
