It means the only one that can cast that spell is your main char...if he/she happens to be a mage or sorcerer.

Only your PC can cast find familiar in BG2, not NPCs.

Ron, first I think you mean undisclosed sources, as in secret. And second, don't you read the previous posts before you reply! Just saving you from further embarassment Image

Hopefully your familiar is deaf.

I know I read to much of that Asterix books, I could never play a bard without thinking of troubadix Image

My familiar got sucked up by a Nishruu in that fight with drow before you enter Ust'Natha. Before they released the patch fixing that bug, of course. Now my familiar's gone forever! At least I didn't lose any Constitution points.

All familiars are weak...

Alienbob, the familiar you get depends on your alignment. I'm neutral good, and I get a pseudo dragon. Regardless, all familiars are nothing compared to your characters. They should be kept in your inventory, lest you lose your familiar and a constitution point. So don't feel too bad, because all familiars suck in battle. The HP bonus a mage gets is the main reason for getting one. I wonder if I would get an ADDITIONAL HP bonus if I played again and summoned a familiar? Can you say superpower mage?

The type of familiar you get is decided by your alignment:

Lawful Good, Neutral Good: Pseudo dragon
Ac -2
Hp 24
magic resistance 50%
Thaco 13 hit for 1-3 damage, save or be renderd unconscious for 2 rounds

Chaotic Good: Fairy Dragon
Ac 4
Hp 24
magic resistance 32
Can cast mirror image and silence 15' radius

Lawful Neutral: Feret
Ac 0
Hp 24
Magic resistance 50%
75% Pickpockets
Stealth 40%
Find Traps 20%

True Neutral: Rabbit
Ac -4
Hp 24
Magic resistance 75%
50% find traps
30% stealth

Chaotic Neutral: Cat
Ac 0
Hp 24
magic resistance 50
99% Stealth ability

Lawful Evil: Imp
Ac 2
HP 18
Magic Resistance 25%
can cast polymorph self

Neutral Evil: Dust Mephit
Ac 6
Hp 24
Magic resistance 10%
can cast glitter dust twice a day

Chaotic Evil: Quasit
Ac 2
Hp 24
Magic resistance 25%

So if you want something different, you have to play a different alignment

btw, read the spell description Image

Yeah I was worried you wouldnt be able to get a familiar if you dualclassed.... but yes indeed you could, at least if you dual to mage from another class.... I duno how it works otherwise???... And I got this lazy ass rabbit, he's got my style

As long as you are the main char and you are mage, you can cast find familiar
dual class, multi or true mage, didn't matter

even a bard can have a familiar ( at least as long as he doesn't start singing Image )
