Just how bad is this game anyway?

I apologise if this has already been addressed. I didn't see any threads but only took a quick look.
I am a big fan of D W Bradley - he has done some amazing games like Wizardy 7 for example, and Cybermage was incredible for its day on old DOS, and incredibly underrated by the way in my opinion. Wizards and Warriors was another great game with loads of innovations that none of the reviewers who once again panned it even seemed to notice. Do the critics just dislike Bradley?
That said, Dungeon Lords has also been totally panned by just about every critic on the net and has gotten some truely horrible reviews, probably excessively nasty as you can almost feel the frustration on the parts of many reviewers.
At the same time this is a thriving site and a lot of people are playing so the game can't be THAT bad...
So did the latest patch (1.3?) fix the game and is it now playable? More to the point, is the game fun? Before I plunk down 50 bucks I would like an opinion from someone who is actually playing it.
Thanks in advance ...

to tell you the truth there are a couple of bugs but not bad enough to be that bad of a game, its actully pretty fun and if you just follow the advice on what people say about bugs in the forum it shouldnt be that bad, the bugs dont appear that often so its not so bad(personally im wondering if the testers did a good job or tested at all) all in all its a good game and you should try playing

I am honestly enjoying this game -- I am a veteran of many many games, my first being The Magic Ring in 1982 (hmmm, yes a long while ago). That game was fun but the end-game was bugged; I could never finish it. But it taught me to kick back and remember "its only a game" with the purpose to entertain and fill some void in our lives. Anyway, this game reminds me a lot of the old Wizardy games, pre-7 and 8, you know... the good ones.
Yes it is buggy, and yes I take advantage of every pathing exploit I can... hey, if I were in real combat and could set myself up to kill and not be killed, I would do it in a flash -- I guess that's the Battlefield sniper shining through.
BTW - I am a high level veteran of EQ, L2, etc. but I enjoy this game because it is without the hassles of sadistic online players whose sole purpose seems to be to bring hate, domination, and a world of woe to others. I find this most like WoW with the quests, etc.
So, yeah, I like this game -- it has all the right elements, bugs and all.

Is the game fun?
The latest patch fixed the map and I don't know of anything else
that it fixed.
Is the game fun, yes it is especially if you read the posts on the forum
that offer tips, hints, glitches and spoilers. They make it easier and
one might say more rewarding. While I am playing the game I am hoping
for patch 1.4 as that could resolve alot of the problems some members
are having.
I think that what makes this game so much fun is the fighting style and
the control you have of your character during the battles. The game is
fun if after you develop your character a little you switch the game from
the default normal/normal to hard/more setting for degree of difficulty/
number of encounters with monsters. The game is fun if you like being
surrounded by 30 monsters including Barrowgrim's soldiers, mages, snakes,
a pack of wolves, goblins and scorpions and you happen to have either
the Blast Nova or Fire Nova spells assigned to hotkeys. Oh yah it's fun.
There is a little level 3 Arcane spell called Fire Burst that may be the best
spell in the game. I have killed three dragons with it while timing their fire
sweep. This spell is not like Fireball but it fires two independently targeting
fire bursts at once and as long as you are facing your enemy even if you
have to spin around while using it the bursts find a target even at a distance.
The spell allows you to take out enemies before they reach you if there
are alot of them and it renews as you rest. I would suggest stocking up
with as many of this spell as you can afford and it isn't one of the expensive
spells in the game.
I would go get the game now and make sure the version you start with is
version 1.0 because I don't know if they fixed some of the more lucrative
exploits in patch 1.1. You can sell a merchant a spell or a potion he doesn't
carry and turn around and buy as many as you want which is how to stock
up on the spell Fire Burst.
I would get to level 9 before entering Fargrove and it can be done in the
most part from two relatively save spots. The spots are the ruins near
Simon where you start the game and the shacks to the east of Simon and
the ruins. I spent my days by Simon in the ruins and my nights back on
the porch of the shack w/o all the tall grass in front. I almost forgot that
each shack has a chest in it and as poor as the bow is in this game you
definitely want a bow if you do not have one.
I got level five and my character was strong enough with a little strategy
and so I went mountain climbing up the east side of the mountains on the
way into Fargrove. The mountains are off the obvious main path and that
is where all the fun monsters are including Trolls who give excellent exp
for early in the game. The most important thing you need to do is take
notice where the moon rises so when you want to come down off the
mountains you head to the west or the direction that the moon sets.
Make sure you put 5 points into general skill Athletics or something like
that. That will enable you to do backflips which w/o any patching will allow
you to use the backflip if necessary to climb the mountain. Lower your
games difficulty rating to normal and encounters also to normal before you
want to climb as goblins, rats, wolves and other pests can knock you down.
I got level nine up there and then entered Fargrove. Watch your poison
cures as I started out with one and had a total of three by level nine. There
are alot of poisonous monsters and reload if you get poisoned. That bow
comes in handy here even though it isn't very good.
I think you will enjoy the fighting both with sword, magic and occasionally
the bow in this game. I have no clue as to whether the game will be fixed
so that I can finish it but I am enjoying the game. Install patch 1.3 after
you have made use of the money earning exploits in town. I would give
yourself lots of money with those exploits before patching.
Enjoy the game even though DW should never allowed it to be realeased
in the state it was in when it hit the market. I had no problems w/o the
patches before I was ready to go to Arindale and by then I had patched
to v1.3.
