It depends on your level. My first suggestion is don't engage a lich before you have level 7 priest spells in your party.
For the rakshaha's i can only say that i killed them very easily, but all my party members were level 16 or so at that time. So if you just started my overall suggestion is: level up. Come back later and you'll see that you end up at the winning side of these battles.

There is a lich strategy on this site, but the easiest way to whip the City Gates baddie is with a protection from magic scroll (purchased from Ribald in the Adventurer's Mart). Use it on your best fighter, move in and be patient. Keep whacking away until his protections wear out or he gets chewed up by the pit fiend he summons. Good loot/sword in the room once you win.

As for the druid grove encounter, summon what allies you can and use all the protection spells/potions you want. It's still a tough fight for lower level parties. Best strategem I found here was to concentrate all attacks on one baddie at a time, and then go outside and heal up. Return, repeat attacks on one baddie, then go outside as often as necessary. They don't pursue you and they don't heal up.

What I have been doing is with a lower level party, just haste your thief, and run in pick the lock on the chest, grab the loot and run. Later, after you have leveled up some, you can go back and kill the Lich.
