Moving from BG1 to BG2

Hi, I was wondering how you choose your kit and if you get to reselect your proficencies after beating BG1 and moving to BG2. I have never beat BG1, as I always restart and find a better character to play. (Example) If you play through BG1 with a fighter who has profiecencies in long sword and bow, do you get to change him to a kensai with profiecencies in whatever you want? This has always baffled me and I would like to know the answer.

Thank you in advance. FL

IIRC proficiences in BGI are much more general (e.g. blunt weapons rather than flail, club) so you do get to rechoose them. This would apply in every case regardless of kit limitations.

Yeh, I'm as confused as FL, if I import an x level ranger from BGI to BGII can I chose for him to an x level archer, stalker or beastmaster at character generation?

Also if I have chosen proficiency in short swords can this be converted to katanas in BGII or will I be restricted in my choices?

Any help in clearing this up for me will be greatly appreciated. Ta.

You choose the kit for the class you played in BGI and get to reposition all of the proficiency points that you earned in BGI (maybe there is a bonus added in BGII depending on class too).

Basically, you will carry over total number of proficiency points.

For example, if your fighter has 2 proficiency points in longsword, 2 in bows (or was that ranged weapons?), and 1 in shortsword at the end of BG1, you will carry 5 proficiency points to BG2 at the begining, then you will re-allocate total of 5 proficiency points to whatever weapon you choose.

Since there is no kits in BG1, you can create Kensai, and allocate whole points into melee weapons, even if your original fighter used to use bows in BG1.

Another thing you will carry over is XP points, so if you go through all the side quests and ToSC, your starting XP will be higher than 89,000xp SoA usually starts.

I don't think Imoen will carry over her XP, though, and even if you used her as single class thief at the end of BG1, she still will be thief-mage at the begining of SoA.

The same applies for Minsc, Jaheira, Edwin and Viconia. NPC's generally join the party at the same level (or XP) as the PC I believe.

Thank you all for clearing this up. I am currently playing a multiplayer game of 4 custom characters and it is going great. Can't wait to allocate the profiencies in BG2 though. :D

There is a suggestion if that is the case.

Export each of your custom characters before the final battle. So that you can import any of them as PC in BG2 when you start a new game (I mean, not the one you are intend to do right now. You may later find you want to play so-and-so character as pc but will not want to go through BG1 again. Then, you can import one of your characters there).

PC is half-elf cleric/ranger and I plan on using all the tomes on him since cleric rangers get the best spells (regular cleric spells plus insect plague etc.). But thanks, I may try that on a later play through if I want to change pc.
