can't pick objects up

I just got the game, installed the official 1.2 and the unofficial 1.7 patch. I'm stuck in the tutorial in a room where I'm supposed to use the E key to pick up one of a couple of tin cans and throw them to distract the enemy guarding the door. The problem is that I can't pick them, or any other non-inventory item (like the lookpicks or the kay card) I also couldn't select fists as weapons earlier in the tutorial.
Has anyone else had this problem? What should I do?

Same problem. Patch 1.2 and 1.9 installed. Can't pick up some objects, like newspapers. Stuck in The Ghost...Midnight. Help?

Short solution: Reinstall up to the 1.2 patch. After that, I hear it gets weird, but if you stop there, you should be golden. Keep an eye on this forum for new patches that actually work - there are regular posts. I hear that there is a 1.8 patch that actually works, but don't ask me where it is - browse the forum. The post about that was within the last few weeks.

I had that problem as well, but after I uninstalled everything, cleaned out the folders and the registry, reinstalled the game and then installed the official patch v1.2 only; I played through an entire game and had no difficulties.
I have subsequently installed v1.8 then v1.9 and have encountered no problems. But I would recommend v1.2 ONLY and playing through at least once. This is from my experience.
