Once you go to Brynnlaw, can you ever go back to Athkatla? Or should you complete all the Act II business before leaving? Is it a one-way trip? I am still learning the game and, anxious as I am to rescue Imoen, I have lots I want to do in Athkatla and surrounding areas too.

Yes, you do go back to Athkatla, but once there, you don't go back to Brynnlaw, so make sure you do everthing there before moving on (There's not that much).
Good idea getting Imoen first. I did pretty much everything in Athkatla before getting her, so when I did she was a couple of levels behind everyone else. And you definitely want to keep her.

just remember that if you have 6 party members when you arive to brynnlaw you will loose one permanently in the asylym since you cant send them to the coppercornet so you have to tell them to stay where they are. I lost Jan this way, not that i miss him much but the best character to loose here must be yoshimo since he cant survive any way
