Yes it is possible to do absolutely huge amounts of damage with a backstab.

I just had a look at working out the most gross combo and it looks something like this

Class: Kensai/Thief
Lvl : 12 / High enough to do the maximum 5x backstab modifier
Weapons: C. Fury in main hand and Crom Faeyr in off hand (giving str of 25)
Other equipment: gauntlets of weapon expertise

OK so here we go for damage, assuming that you use the kai ability and score a critical

13 (weapon damage) +4 (12th level kensai dmg bonus) +12 (Strength 25 dmg bonus) +2 (Gaultlets) = 31 x 2 (Critical hit) x 5 (backstab multiplier = 310

Which would kill just about anything in the game.

One word assasin X7 duel weilding(like you said) C.Fury and C.Fayer lets do the math
13+20+14*7*2(for critical)=658 thats a lot!!!

I dont think the strength bonus is added before the backstap multiplier but after.

so that would make it for an assassin 398 still quit a lot.

I don't like backstabs.

1. They are hard to impliment correctly (you almost have to be invisible and even THEN it doesn't always work).

2. Everyone but their cousin uses Stoneskin which will protect against a backstab *TOTALLY*

3. (see 1.) They are hard to set up, often requiring more than one round.

260 hp ?!! Pfffui, how did you do that ?
Strength bonuses are NOT multiplied since first BG patch (they were before  )
So now best I'm able to do is approx 150 with a 20th lvl+ Ftr/Thief...

But Polaris, backstabs are quite easy to implement, I do that 20 times a (game) day :)
Just have 100% + Hide in Shadows/move silent, and wear a cloak of Non detection....
My last victim was Qilue, one blow, 72 damage *only* :D :D
OK the stoneskinned mages are a pain

Theoretically, would Sarevok's Deathbringer Assault be added before or after the multiply?

i too was wondering abotu the deathbringer assault. i posed that question on the topic, "hehehe sarevok, i did it" or whatever it says.
if so, the way i see it, a backstab would bring around 1000 damage

It's Pete's picture, I just traced the link down to see the picture. Tripod is bad about not showing the pictures on different web sites. (I believe it's called "stealing bandwidth") Yahoo is just as bad. So I left a link to the file where the picture is stored at Tripod.

My point was that all the major opponents (esp in ToB) either have Stoneskin, True-sight or both.

Truesight DOES work perfect against hide in shadows, and it negates any backstab.

All said, because stoneskin and truesight are so common, I just don't think backstabbing is worth the trouble.

True Sight, however, does NOT work against nondetection (assuming you're hidden in the first place :P ).

Most of my characters are dual(fighter or mage) theives just because of backstab. Even on characters that can't be backstabbed, just being able to start off next to the enemy is nice. In my last game four of my characters were constantly hidden in the shadows, the 5th used staff of the magi, and the 6th always had pixie dust spells ready. Having 4 guys attack an unsuspecting victim at the same time is nice, whether or not they backstab.

hmmm...interesting things I learned here. You mean it's actually possible to backstab with weapons other than piercing??? Wow I dind't know that. The 260 backstab I did was with either short sword of the mask +4 or dagger of the stars +4. I tried to backstab with staff of magi (with use any item skill) once but it didn't let me LOL. I have grand mastery in dagger so maybe that's why I did as much damage as I did. If you want to backstab consistently it's CRUCIAL that you have boots of speed and cloak of non-detection. With the cloak you can't be detected by magic but some undead and dragons can still see you though :(

BTW, what's that Sarevok's special assault thing? It goes off for me once in a while and does 200 damage. Is that something that is triggered randomly or is that a skill?

Dunno about that. True-Sight always worked against non-detection against ME! (I also found that Keldorn's Truesight was *the* Anti-theif ability. I no longer fear backstabs.)

True sight doesn't work against a hide-in-shadows thief with the Cloak of Nondetection, so that's great (didn't try the spell since I have the cloak). Even if not used for backstabbing, it's great for just scouting mage-laden areas. :) Yes, stoneskin is a pain, but I imagine weapons that dispel would help with that, though I couldn't backstab with non-piercing/slashing weapons (e.g. Crom).
