Tanks that you didn't think were tanks

Have you ever played a character for a specific quest or because you never tried them before, and found out that they can tear it up in combat as a tank?
I took Valygar because I wanted to enter the planar sphere, but when I gave him the Corthala Family Blade and the Dakkons Zerth blade he is choppin down enemies like a hot knife through butta.
I also tried out Jaheira, who gets a lot of negative critiscism. She doesnt deserve it, as her and Mazzy are tied for power as far as I see it. She has those loved-by-all druid spells like insect plague and can hold her own as a front line woman any day. i got her armor class doen to -15 without any spells so she rarely ever got hit and with the club of detonation she was spankin mellisan.
Any others you guys would like to share?
They could be any characters that you didnt like but when you got them you fell "in love"

Armor to -15
Well if u instal tob and stil play shadow of amn you get those specialities and you can put on her an armor with low ac i gues that is how he did it or perhaps he had a bard.
Is better to do good things, rather than bad.

Having 19 DEX helps a lot as does any Drow armour. Both of those really make a difference to AC.
As for the original question...
I didn't think Anomen was going to be as tough as he turns out to be in melee considering most of his classes were in Cleric.

Fighter/Cleric ARE awsome tanks! True, they lack a stoneskin-like spell, but they have plenty of good buffing spells, ex : Righteous Magic, Draw Upon Holy Might, Champion's Strength, Blade Barrier, etc.
They also have 2 awsomes spells in melee : Harm and Slay Living.
Even a single-class cleric is able to Tank due to the ability to wear heavy armors and cast divines buffing spells.
Fighter/Druids are best damage taker, mainly because of Stoneskin, but they do not have any buffing spells comparable to those of a Fighter/Cleric's.

I gave her the best armor, best shield, and used imprved bard song but without the bard song it was -10 or so
valygar is officially my favorite NPC. I thought he was weak but he hits so much and kills enemies that are tough when soloing by himself.
what would you rate valygar i give him a 9/10

Valygar is a great character although his, how shall I put it, less than forthcoming personality means that I only take him with certain other characters, most notably Mazzy. Fortunately Mazzy is one of my favourites and another contender for an underestimated tank (ultimately being able to gain grand mastery in several weapons)

Does that include Viconia?

I actually think bards make the best decoy/damage takers, Haer'Dalis is especially good (making use of defensive spin)

So true. His very"Strong and silent type is pretty boring to use but what does it matter. i dont care for his emotionless battle cry, [so be it, i am your doom]

.
I have a paladin, edwin, tashia(sorceress mod), valygar, anomen, and yoshimo, who should i dump for mazzy?

Well, you will have 3 mages after Spellhold, while you only need 1 or 2 and can only afford to equip 1 with decent items, so I would drop a mage: Edwin, Tashia or Imoen (but you need her for traps/locks, right?).

I didn't say it was boring it's just one of the reasons I prefer this game to other CRPG's is the inter-party banter so I like lots of it. While his character is justifiably gloomy he was rather short changed in the number of banters (Bioware seemingly preferred Minsc, in the same way Cernd lost out to that Harper harpy)

You don't necessarily have to dump anybody. It depends on whether you are willing to lose some of your arcane fire power for ranged/melee support. I usually take the pair simpley because I like their relationship. It is not a requirement.

Out of the three I'd drop Edwin. It makes more sense given that
1.) Your paladin is unlikley to work with an evil character and also the rest of your party will be good, meaning that you will have to worry about Edwin leaving if your party reputation gets too high
2.) Although I've never seen it I've read somewhere that [highlight to read]
there is a potentially lethal conflic between the wizard and your man Valygar
3.) Being a sorcerer Tashia will be able to cast more spells

Thats kinda what I meant, they liked certain characters more and worked on their personalities more. like where did the conversation about boo playing with squirrels come from? valygar definatley had less emphasis put on him, unlike minsc, imoen, jaheira etc.

Once Jaheira (or any character gets numerous greater whirlwind they really become an stoppable force)... More a howitzer than a tank

One thing about tanks is that with enemy AI,they always seem to concentrate melee attacks on the char with the weakest AC. So in my partay,
Keldorn is down to half HP's in two rounds. So while my other fighters are turning enemies into a cloud of DNA mist , he is usually running for cover while chugging healling potions
