I'd go with a Conjurer. Conjurers and Illusionists miss out on the fewest spells, but I'd rather pass up Divinations than Necromancies. I also like Abjurers, however only a human can be an Abjurer.
It all depends really on how you like to play (powergaming or role playing).

Conjurers are great, but one thing I didn't take into consideration when making one is that they can't cast Identify. Oy, that was a pain.
Although, it's been good for roleplaying. There are a few things that the party is carrying around until the glasses recharge, or until the mage becomes smart enough to know what that scroll is. (of course, the two scrolls I kept around for that purpose were both cursed)

The sorcorer is the best magic user in the game.
'The best spell is the one you can cast, not the one you would have cast if you had've memorised it the night before.'
Role playing-wise it also goes well with the storyline as the the description of the sorc is that they may be part god etc.
Just remember with sorc that once you choose a spell, that's it. So think long term.

On the topic, does anyone have a list of the familirars for each alignment and what they do?? I've heard the rabbit (true neutral) is the best but I want to know what they all do, just so I can experiment

If asked to choose between the mages, I would probably go for the normal mage. They get all the spells. Oh yeah, I was playing a conjurer in Icewind Dale and he was only able to cast 2 magic missiles. It may be a bug or it may not, but I just developed a distaste for conjurers after that.

If you want a list of familiars go to the search function and type in familiars, there have been heaps of posts.

There ara a lot of topic like this one made in the past....if you cjeck the search bottom you'll find everything you need.......but you give me the opportunity of talking about mages....so......
My vote goes to Necromancer (the one i like most); sorcerer (the more powerful IMO); i don't like conjuration too much because a death spell will instantly kill all your summoned creatures....Abjuration is the best specialist IMO

RPG-wise, I favor the Invoker. Magic Missile and Fireball are *the* mage spells per definition. RPG-wise, I also like the Necromancer. Playing-wise however, I find the Necromancer to be one of the weakest kit. The Illusionist spells are really good (Spook, Blur, Mirror Image and Improved/Mass Invisibility etc) while the only exceptional Necromancer spell is Death Spell (for eliminating summoned creature and Umber Hulks - most other ennemies will do successful saves vs spell). Skull Trap is of course better than Fireball (for Bards in particular) but the short range is a huge disadvantage. Playing-wise I hold the Conjurer as the best kit. Not because I'm much for the summoning spells (the battle of wills when the Mage stands frozen can be quite dangerous) but rather because I can do without the Divination spells (uses high lore, another Mage, a Bard or Glasses of Identification to identify items).

Any mage will do: what defines "best?" Play the kind of mage that suits your mood. Wild mages are great fun, especially if you don't reload when you get a bad chaotic effect from their spells. Sorcs are powerhouses. Each specialist type has their own benefits and drawbacks.
