Evil Tree Dudes!

Nobody warned me about these guys. It's like a stolen scene from LOTR. I beamed down to the Vale of Ruin and I was swarmed by huge, Evil Tree Dudes. I was getting mobbed by evil, wicked trees up to 5 at a time. Branches were flying everywhere! Is this a normal random encounter in the Vale of Ruin? I expected them up North in the Demigoth lands. Hence the Tree Totem requirement quest. Could this be General Trajek's 'army'?
To escape certain doom I employed fire based attacks and dealt out some damage.

Usually when you run it to that many there is a witch near by. When fighting the guy for the wizard quest I got spammed by 4 bladewitches, 2 twisted sisters, 5 tree monsters and a dragon. I somehow made it through only to be killed moments later by a huge group on ninjas (jerks hit fast).

Yeah, it must depend on your class. First time through, I got the same as Ferncliff, but no dragon. This time, none at all.
On the first time, there was a grove in one of the little valleys which was marked on the automap and seemed to be a tree spawning place. This time, there's nothing there.
Three or four fire nova spells will calm the trees.

evil tree thingy dudes...
I really detest the witches... I usually play a melee character... so I spend a lot of time asleep in thorns or running around slowly with things spinning over my head whist I drink potions... I have learned to really enjoy the little death-cry they have when you have given them the final run-through! (sometimes I pretend that the witches are my ex-wife... very satisfying kills)
sorry... I do go a bit over the top...

Umm, I think they're just a random encounter sometimes. I ran into them my first time out from Fargrove when I went to see the swamp witch for my wizard initiation quest, four of them....wasn't very pretty at all since I couldn't rely on any big spells. Only thing that saved me was having a whole buttload of healing potions from having my random encounters on high during the "sneak into fargrove" part and triggering a bunch of goblins over and over again (thank god for foresight).
