Yeah it really is a problem. I lost control and my character walked straight into a werewolf.

well, i had the same problem and it turned out to be my keyboard. this keyboard has some extra buttons for opening programs like I.E., email etc and i had to shut down it's program so the game could run smoothly.
i don't know if this is your case, but it solved my problem.

Check the docs/cd that came with your keyboard, if there aren't, chances are you have no special keyboard. Otherwise, see if you can find anything keyboard related in the configuration screen. And lastly, check under Installed Software or Installed Hardware if there's anything keyboard related.
Also look at Joystick (or aother such devices) related tools and drivers.
On a side note, sometimes the view just starts to go around in circles uncontrollable, usually in third person view. If this is what's happening, it's just a quirk in the engine. Try switching to first person view.

I have a similar periodic problem with my keyboard. It becomes unresponsive, and if I look at my NUM LOCK, CAPS LOCK, and SCROLL LOCK lights, they are all blinking in unison. This has plagued me for some time, but the quick and dirty fix is to hit ESC twice in a row. This will take you to the menu. Then click on Continue, and your keyboard should be responding again. It's a kludge, I know, but it's worked fine for me while I try to find the source of the problem.

i find disabling and exiting all the programs and icons in the quick tray (on the toolbar on the desktop) that run in the background like my firewall, internet etc. reduces the lagging and the mouse becoming unresponsive etc. its the only game i've ever had to do this with. sometimes i wonder if anyone actually tested this game before it was released lol
