Is there any reason my f/m/t (almost maxed) can't set a trap to save his life??? On his stat sheet, it appraises my setting abilities at 15 or so... Any help would be great...

The higher your trap setting ability is, the better your chances of setting a trap. Given that those scores can significantly exceed a 100.. well you get the picture

You don't start setting frequent traps until you reach at least 70%, before then, it's just too rare to be useful.

Set traps...
So then... how do I raise my Set Traps ability? I couldn't during level-ups... Or does that ability progress with Detect Traps? Don't think so, because my detect traps is pretty high. Thanks.

No you should be able to do it at level up, I think it is the skill at the bottom of the list.

I'm pretty sure my options were
Pick Pockets
Open Locks
Move Silently
And ?Hide in shadows?

You should also have Detect Illusions and Set Traps the list is ordered as follows
Pick Pockets
Detect Traps
Open Locks
Move Silently
Hide in Shadows
Detect Illusions
Set Trap

Really, i seem to remember that from a previous thief game, but its hard to believe i'm just not scrolling down. Perhaps it's multi-class restriction?

It is not a multiclass restriction. I have played both a multiclass mage/thief and fighter/thief, and I've never experienced any problems allocating my thieving points.
Without any trouble, I usually put them all in:
*open locks
*detect traps
*set traps
*hide in shadows
*move silently.
I'm guessing you either forgot to scroll down (which can be surprisingly easy to do, I have previously found

), or you might have some form of bug.
Or, you have a dual class character rather than a multiclass. For example, if you start out as a human thief, and then become something else, you will no longer be able to develop your skills as a theif. But, you probably know that already

Thanks for the help. It's a f/m/t, now maxed, so this was for future reference, i guess... peace.

If you still plan to use that character, you could reallocate your thief points with Shadow Keeper.
I have sometimes used it when I've had Imoen in my party, and I've wanted her capable of setting traps.

Another option I've thought of is that you were trying to level it up on a mage level/fighter level. As such, you couldn't scroll down because it only lets you do that on thief... at least that's one explanation.

The first time I played a character, I also didn't scroll down, and it took me an embarrassingly large number of levels to realize that there were more abilities than I thought. I ended up turfing the guy and starting a new one so I could do it properly.
Sigh.

Yeah, but now that i think about it, setting traps isn't that important. Alot of people say they're cheesy, and after looking at those hihg level traps, i'd have to agree. Besides, I've yet to find an enemy where i needed them, though Draconis and Abazigal are coming up... But then again, I've found that basic protection spells, a load of protection from magic weapons, and greater whirlwind can take 'em down damn fast anyway...
