Tech Help- "Insert Play Disc" Error

Ok, I admit it, I'm regretablly inept, and have found myself in a glitch nightmare that I can't escape. Someone PLEASE HELP...

I've run into the "please insert Play disc" (even though the disc IS in) problem, and even a reinstall didn't help.

Here's the scoop. After growing weary of the loot problem, I looked online and, woohoo, found a fix with Troika's patches 2 and 3, and saved them to a folder OTHER than the TOEE folder. I then clicked to activate them, and blammo, the "please insert" problem started. So... I deleted the patches and redownloaded them into the TOEE folder, then clicked to activate... and bupkis. Still says, "Please insert blah blah blah". Argh.

So then I hit the books, and after some research, I found this here killer website. I spent several hours digging through old threads, and saw the same problem mentioned a few times, but never a fix. I've even sent some pm's, but got no response. I saw Galug the Dwarf's suggestion on patches, and between here and the co8 site, I downloaded Troika's patches 1 and 2, the co8 patch, the temple patch, and even Liv's patch. Now, not hearing back on any of my pm's, and tired of being unable to play, I deleted the Atari folder all together. Then I reinstalled TOEE, and transferred the 5 patches to that folder. I clicked to activated Troika patches 1 and 2, but couldn't get the co8 or temple patches to work, they kept coming up as notepad documents (mebbe cuz I lack a de-zipper???). Anyway, I tried to start the game with just the Troika patches 1 and 2, to make sure it'd work, and I still get the same #$!&&!^& "Please insert Play disc" message.

For the love of God, I know the game's not the best, but I'd only gotten to play until around level 5 before I got myself into this mess, and I'd really like to play it through at lease ONCE.

Now, Sol Ivictus, over at co8, suggested I try using a no-disc program, to play the game without the cd-rom, but I'd like to avoid that if possible. Please, oh God, PLEASE, someone help me out here and tell me how to outsmart this damn thing. I'll even put ya on my Christmas card list. PLEASE....

Your bumbling neophyte in arms,
