How to kill Balor

The Best way, I have found to kill Balor, is to transform into the Slayer. My 45HP mage suffered minimal damage and kicked the crap out of balor. Since my party was already highly respected and the 2 point reputation drop was not harmful.

I actually have to agree with you, though on my second time through the game my character consecutively stunned him with the Celestial Fury katana and I was able to kill him. Still, the Slayer was by far most effective.

What + does your weapon have to be to hit him?

I usually have a mage heavy party, and I find the following works well:

Summon some Mordekainen's Swords and/or Skeleton Warriors. While your pets are keeping him busy, pelt him with Lower Resistance spells, followed by magic missiles. Contingencies/triggers are handy here.

He goes down nice and quickly like this, usually with little or no damage to my party.

@ Firelighter: My best guess is at least +3 or, more likely, +4, as the celestial fury's abilities worked against him but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't actually do any damage to him. Minsc had Lilarcor and I don't htink it worked either.

In addition to DW: cast Haste and Resist Fear.

Casting Protection from Evil on the party may also help, if it's the Balor in the Underdark, one of it's favourite tricks is to cast one of the Stun spells. It may prove useful to have the majority of the party wait out of range until the spell is cast.
+3 weapons should work against any demon.

I never had to use the slayer,
celestial fury + Carsomyr
resist fear and protection from death spells and the balor is a kitten

I've always figured that it's more or less meant that you should use the Slayer form to defeat him. You've just recieved it, and here you meet a worthy foe who will prove hard for you if it's your first playthrough.

Kinda handy to turn into something far more powerful and just whop his arse? :)

I don't necessarily disagree. I've done both though.. and I have to say, it is way more satisfying to employ a bit of strategy. To me at least, transforming into The Slayer seems sort of cowardly and cheap ;)
I suppose, however, that much the same could be said for employing summons... personal playing style I guess :D

I never had that much problems with the balor
But then again i usually have HLA's by then.
And usually i just kill the gnome and insult the dragon as much as i can.
But he isn't tough is he? Just make sure you are resistant to fear.

You had passed Spellhold and yet you had 45 hp?

Regardless, with the Balor who butchers all the little svirfneblin in the Underdark, on my first run through, he stunned most of fighters, and then I used Horn of Blasting, and I think it snapped them out of stun (?).

It's also possible to cheese your way through this one if you have an anti-fear spell available.

Simply take any of your fighters who has a large weapon (halberd or two handed sword, or Tansheron's bow) and park them in the far northwest of that section. The Balor is too big to reach you, so you can hit them but not vice versa.

Slayer is too cheap for me, I like strategy.

A few bolstering spells here and there make it pretty easy(resist fear, prot. from evil etc.). just have a good weapon like Celestial fury to stun him and a Carsomyr on a keldorn to wack the dragonish demon.

I think the only times i used slayer was...against ravager, irenicus in the tree, the lich from the soul ball in underdark, and a battle with pirates right out of spellhold down by the docks, where my assassin had the boots of speed and zoomed ahead of everyone else, getting himself into a battle with around 12 pirates.

i never REALLY need it, just use it to cheese some enemies.

I always simply kill it in hand to hand

By the way, a friend of mine didn't have any +3 weapons in the underdark, so he used stoneskin and fireshield to take it down

I had a really tough time trying to beat it on my solo f/m/t. Then I tried disintegrate and it was dead before it had even appeared properly ;)
