Hi! I'm a bit stuck. I'm in both the thiefs and fighters guilds. I'd like to do both but one of the early quests is to take the codebook from the woman at Balmora thieves guild hq. My sneak is at 21 but I can't creep up on her and rob her - I keep having to bash her head in and i don't want to pay the 1000 ""make amends" fee. How can I get round this?

If you're on PC, you could always look up and enter the console command to get a copy of the book, or you could use the console to increase your sneak skill until after you have the book. If you're using the XBOX version (which is no fun, because you can't get mods ), you could go learn a chameleon spell, which would mean that if you actually managed to get the book off her, she wouldn't be able to see you, and you wouldn't have to smash her skull in.

Too bad that you're in the Theives Guild, because if you weren't, and you just joined later, you would be able to get it free if she liked you enough.

I wasn't in the exact same situation but i just bribed her for it. D

Im playing it on Xbox so I cant do mods. I bribed her so she likes me 100% but I guess because Im in the theives guild I still have to bash her head in and then give them 1000 to rejoin. Rar! This is annoying - the fighters guild only pay 50 for the book!

If you either kill or bribe her. you'll never get on the top of Thieves Guild (aside from the fact, that you can bribe her only if you're outside the Guild). The only compromise way is to steal the book, steal unnoticed. It's not easy, but it's possibele, i do it all the time (though with save before usually). Just have decent stealth and pump yourself up with agility and speed boosts. Sneak behind her and pick her pocket.
More detailed:
- if you are in the Thieves Guild, you do not have an opportunity to bribe;
- if you bribe and then are going to join their Guild, you won't be accepted;
- if you kill, you're expelled at the spot, do not know if ever accepted back, i'd rather believe that not.
The only way how to stay on friendly foot with both guilds is the thievery.
There were reports that Balmora FG steward may forget about the task if one had done several other jobs for FG in other towns and had raised enough already in the Fighters Guild, altogether i am not sure since i have never tested that. Moreover, i play on PC, there have been a lot of patches what could have changed it.

P.S. Don't forget to boost Int (responsible for Security), and there's never too much of Luck.

This angers me! I think using mods and cheating via console is boring because you aren't completing the original game. Besides, in my opinion, the Xbox game is much better.

There will be no xbox vs PC nonsense in this thread, or anywhere else in this forum. It's true that there are many great mods available for the game on the PC, but let's not rub that in xbox users' faces. Similarly, if someone starts spouting off about xbox, don't respond; simply hit the little warning sign, and send me a PM about it.
