In chapter 6 I had a strange random encounter. Clones of my guys (with no equipment) attacked. They cast only low-level spells and punched with fists (maybe). Very non-dangerous. I found it a weird encounter because it wasn't life threatening at all...

Also, why are there clones attacking me? Did I miss something?

Concerning the encounter: this is in the one where Irenicus evokes dopplegangers of your party, correct? Because that's not a random encounter. It can also be pretty dangerous, depending upon the spells your doubles cast. Nothing as difficult as the ToB mods that restore the original, intended difficulty level to some of the bosses, but still not exactly a breeze.

If you are facing another doubling encounter, frankly, I haven't seen it.

I think we are talking about 2 different encounters. In spellhold Irenicus casts a doppleganger spell and you have to deal with your mirror images plus Jon himself. That is rather difficult especially if you get caught in some of the mages AoE bombs (i found out the hard way).

The encounter I am talking about is in chapter 6. Thats after you re-emerge from the underdark with all your xp and powerful weapons. So then these duplicates of your party attack you. And they are pathetic since they have no weapons to melee and cast only magic missile and acid arrow. The only thiing confusing about them is that their circles are blue instead of red (enemies) so I was confused on what to do (ate several rounds of low level spells before mopping them up).

I just thought it was a weird encounter that was disconnected from the rest of the story.

Yes, that is the encounter Fable is referring to. If I remember correctly, they are posing as travelling merchants, and ask for your name. If you say it, they change form and attack, if you don't, they leave you be.

Not sure why it is there, it never posed me any threat, I guess it's just to bring back memories from BG1 and the Doppleganger quests.

Now that you mention it, it sure brings back memories. I believe I've met those guys, but just once or twice - surely is a random and strange encounter, with no clues to why it's actually there.

And it doesn't seems as if Fable is talking about the same encounter, since he says it's not random and that it's Irenicus that's invocing them. I don't remember him having anything to do with the travelers.

Yes, it is not random and it is sent by Irenicus. I cannot remember the dialogue exactly, but I know that they mention having been hired.

Now, of course they are not travellers or merchants, they are dopplegangers, evil creatures who can transform. Now, if someone has hired them to kill you, Irenicus is really the only option. All other adversaries are dead.

Well that is just not near true. It could be any number of people you've harmed in the first or the second game. At chapter 6 you've made more than enough enemies; most resent the gith, if you didn't give the sword back. But hey they might try to kill you just for touching a silver sword.

That aside I haven't had any random encounters, is there any way to increase my chances of having one?

That encounter happened to me on my first run but not since. I had forgotten about it until now. The worst random encounter I have had was a beholder throwing me a surprise party in the Athkatla sewers near Roger's beastie...
