Forget The Best Tank.

We all strive to achieve excelence in our main character. We try to make him a strong as possible, spending hours carefully thinking over Proficiancies, Stats and most importantly class. I have finished SoA with every class (and a few Dual Class PC's).

Although that my ....(I'll keep it annonymous) was VERY powerful, I found it boring. But when I played my Assasin I was very happy indeed. I have decided that, If you want to have fun when you play this blardy long game, go an Assasin, or maybe a Swashbuchler or something. They are a very fun class to play. They do not fit into the steriotypical Child Of Bhall class, but who cares? The game lacks a good thief anyway. ;) ;)

I think actully Assassin is the class that fits a Child of Bhaal best (Lord of Murder)... and Assassin is NOT a good "thief" if you spend points in lockpicks and find traps with an Assassin, then you missed the point (well unless you solo and REALLY need a thief) ;)

as for the Swashbuckler, hes missing the coolest thing about thiefs... backstab

can't agree more with u Pebz
the swashbuckler really misses the thing what makes thiefs so cool: backstab

and yes it also think the assassin is the most coolest class to play with.
i loved hiding in shadows everywhere and backstabbing the hell out of everyone i saw. :D :D

Ohhh and i found out something cool about backstab... it seems to pierce armor even if it fails... i did 12 damage to Thaxll'ssillyia (Shadow Dragon) with the short sword of backstabing (coolest assassin weapon :D ) WITHOUT a critical hit, even as it said that the backstab failed...

The assassin kit is the best thief kit IMO....you have combat abilities, the poison weapon ability, and 15 skill points\lvl are not so bad (IMO pickpocket is not worth a point...)
What do you want more????
And it fits with the Child of Bhaal story....

I've played with my assassin for quite some time now, but i stil dont get the poison thing, as everyone seems to be able to save against it.. i know im supposed to use it against mages, so i interrupt their spell casting, but they never survive the backstab anyway...

And does the poison "improve" as you lvl up?

No, only the backstabb improve with the lvl up.....the poison damage depend on the save of the enemy...

Im currently playing SoA with a swashbuckler, the thief kit of the year if you ask me. I always forget to backstab anyway so...=)
He works well as a tank thanks to his thac0 and AC bonuses. And not to forget the Three slots in Dual Wielding.
I've never seen the point of dual classing thief-fighter when you got the swashbuckler.

You know ther might be a way to backstab with a swachbuckler (without cheating).
Import you thief from BG1 and choose swachbuckler as kit.
I think you have still kept your backstab ability only it does not get better (might also work for your thieving skills).

I had it also with my totemetic Druid, She could shape shift to bear(s) and wolve.
I don't know if it works ror thieves also but it is worth to give it a try.

Would you consider 50 extra Hit Points and an extra attack per round a good point? Admittedly, Swashbucklers are something of a one-man-army after they get Use Any Item :)

Lets not forget an important statistic, since you all like Backstab. The assasins backstab multiplyer skyrockets to an incredible 7x in ToB. Even without a critical hit, thats a hell of alot of damge with some good strength to back it up.  :D :D

The "point" of playing a thief is not to have an uberbackstab ability. The point is to have a well rounded character that can perform multiple tasks. The swashbuckler accomplishes this nicely. If you like the assassin, fine, but don't mistake having 7x backstab damage as being a good thief.

i've finished soa & tob w/ an assassin.

imo the assassin was a lot of fun in soa but,
he sucks big time in tob.

most of the opponents who i'd have liked to backstab were able to see my non-detection char. and yet since he was a thief he was not very good in combat (despite a very high strength score + 5 weapons str was 20-22 depending on what str item i was using)

really he became on overblown utility guy, find traps, open locks, scout, set traps, use wands, poison arrows. big deal. my npc's were getting real powerful combat abilities while i could assassinate for one attack per day. he got completely overshadowed by the rest of the party.

ftr/thief or swashbucker imo would be a much better choice. (playing elf ftr / thief now)
