Which of these should be my main Mage?

1) Elf Fighter/Mage/Thief
2) Elf Mage/Thief
3) Gnome Illusionist/Thief
4) Human Thief/Mage (dual after level 7 - 10)

I know none of these options produce the "optimum" Mage (which would be single-classed from the start), but I don't want a character like that in this game. I won't find scrolls fast enough, and I'd rather take care of my Thief and Mage slot with one character, allowing me to add an extra tank. BTW, I have a Bard in the party acting as a backup Mage.

Do you already have Thief in your party? If not, then I would go for the option number 2, Elf Mage/Thief. Human Thief/Mage would also be ok IMO.

Are you, perchance, restarting the game with a different party? ;)

personally i'd go for the elf mage/thief but thats just cos i like playing elves. i don't really like specialist mages in icewind dale as i hate the restrictions you get on spells you can cast.

This character is intended to be my only thief (which I do not value very highly) and my main mage (with a backup bard).
