Tie up loose ends AFTER killing Zuggtmoy (spoilers)

Playing CO8 4.0.0, don't know if this works in unpatched versions...
Halfway through killing Zuggy but have a few side missions left to complete? Your female wizard wants one last fling with Jenelda? Want to wander around until you can tell Zaxis his sister is dead? Yeah, me too.
Anyway, here's the scene: there are a few fungi left alive after my party kills Zuggy but when my cursor passes over the body of a glabrezu Zuggy gated in during the battle I notice there's a blue "lootable" aura around it. So my bard loots it and lo and behold, she finds another node gem. She immediately uses it to teleport to the node, and off the party goes. From there they gate back to the temple, trudge back to the surface and go on their merry way with no endgame movie. Pretty cool seeing Zuggy in the "creatures killed" list (though she wasn't at the top - her CR was only listed as 20).
Finished a few side quests, went back to the temple to finish off the fungi (which in retrospect I realized were summoned creatures and therefore already long gone) and the endgame movie kicked in as soon as the party got back to the secret level. I'm guessing the trigger is being on the secret level and out of combat after Zuggy dies, otherwise, party on dudes!
Now, after all this transpired, I also realized the party never put the original gems in the skull before they had it destroyed, so in theory they could have kept on keepin' on by using one of those to teleport out of the battle after Zuggy was dead, even if she hadn't summoned any demons with superfluous node gems to assist her.
Here's the kicker: being a chaotic and somewhat contrary party who found Burne more than a bit arrogant and annoying, they had previously taken his apprentice (who I affectionately called "Pish") as an NPC and leveled her up as a fighter. Trust me, she had a great time even if she didn't learn much about the ways of wizardry. Anyway, after they left her back at Burne's tower and did some more adventuring, they found the orb and took it back to have it destroyed. After Pish supposedly "destroyed" the orb, they asked her to rejoin the party for the final assault on Zuggy. Even though Burne hadn't taught her squat about magic in the interim, she still had the flaming sword she picked up while she was with them the first time so I knew she'd have a blast. Long story short, when I checked her inventory, she still had the orb and all the items that were supposedly required to destroy it. Apparently, the "destruction" had a placebo effect on Zuggy and sweet little Pish had the last laugh on us all!
