I read something a while back saying you can play Baldurs Gate 1 on the Baldurs Gate 2 engine, or something along those lines, anyone know anything about this?

If you have full installations of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, you can install something called BGTutu that grants all the graphical enhancements, spells and other features into Baldur's Gate 1. Then you just open the BGII game to play BGTutu - you can't play BGII with BGTutu installed though, unless you have another seperate BGII installation.
BGTutu can be found here:
http://www.pocketplane.net/mambo/index. ... &Itemid=98
Make sure you read through the instructions carefully, so the game works correctly.
That website also contains other modifications that work with BGTutu that can also be installed.

Note, Tutu for all the excellent work that's been done on it still isn't fully stable. It's is beta for the 6.0 release, and there are still quite a few bugs. If you do choose to play it, I would not suggest running any other mods with it.

You can also go to spellholdstudios.net and check out BGT-weidu. With Tutu, you play BG1 in the BG2 engine, export your character at the end, uninstall Tutu, and play BG2. With BGT, you play straight through. Tutu is probably somewhat more stable right now.

Tutu 6 is a fairly stable beta, but Fable is correct that if you are new to Tutu then sticking with Tutu 4 and then Fixpack 15 might be easier for you.
And for the record there shouldn't be any problems running other mods at the same time as Tutu--there's a good few of them designed specifically for that purpose. Though again, stick with Tutu 4 if you do since most of the mods were coded while Tutu 4 was the standard.

I had some odd bugs with this. For example, I played using Tutu 4 (the one before 6, because I didn't want to risk testing this 'new' beta) and when I tried to install Tutufix 15, there were errors and I could not, but Tutufix 13 installed perfectly. So I don't know really. There are some cool mods out there for BGTutu, such as the BG1NPC Project (hosted at gibberlings3.net I think?), which really makes it worthwhile to have BGTutu over other conversions
