Dwemer Coherers - Their Purpose

For a while, when playing the game, I have speculated as to the actual purpose of Dwemer coherers. They seem to be a coveted item amongst Vvardernfell NPCs, but what on earth did the dwarves do with the things?

It's possible I missed this bit of lore amongst the many books I've read, I don't know. I've also done a Google search on the subject and come up empty handed.

So, does anyone have any lore-based information, or speculative guesses?

When I first began playing MW, I thought for the longest time they had something to do with Alchemy. It wasn't until I ran some experiments that I stopped ensuring I had one in my inventory while brewing potions. :o

Thoughts? Ideas?

My guess was some kind of Distiller, used in Alchemy.

Or some kind of part for a machine.

I think i heard somewhere about chargeing one up to power something. I think they're some type of dwavern battery.

Yes, there is the 'powered dwemer coherer' in Tribunal...

Some sort of magic device then... I always thought it was a vase

You can find at dwarwen observatories and such so I believe they are used to power stuff. think there is coherers in the Berne (spelling?) vampire lair and the ruin that you are supposed to visit in a mage-guild mission, or maybe it was a Televani, i don't know. Not to mention the one you use in Mournhold to power the ash-storm-machine.
